Husqvarna TR650 recall 2017 - Just do it.

Hi guys, for any of you with a TR650 or thinking of buying one. These are the last of the BMW 650 singles and tuned to 58hp. Like a good looking F650 with more power.
Anyway, if you have a look on line you will find plenty of references to this bike, and the BMW G650 equivalent, having an issue with occasional stalling at idle or when coming off the throttle.
It seemed the issue had fallen on deaf ears, especially once BMW had sold Husky to KTM. However it became a safety issue as people were stalling in busy traffic.
So there is a world wide recall. Contact your local Husqvarna dealer. They will send your ECU back to Magnetti Mirelli in Italy for a complete remap. Take 2 weeks.

My ECU heads off today. From what I have read the bikes run much better with the new map. So you might as well get on to it while it is available and free.
I will report back when my ECU returns.

https://www.vehiclerecallsafety.nzta.govt.nz/

Details:

Recalled:
18 May 2017

Statement:
Market monitoring has shown isolated cases of occasional stalling in the engines of TR 650 Terra and TR 650 Strada model vehicles . If the engine stalls, this could lead to dangerous riding conditions and pose a safety hazard to the rider and other road users.

Instructions:
Owners will be sent a letter to advise them of the recall. Owners should contact an authorised Husqvarna Motorcycles dealer to arrange a booking as the ECU of the vehicle has to be remapped at an external supplier's facility.

Thinking of building an extension, don't know where to start

Can anyone here send me in the right direction? We live in a fairly small 3brm house (120sqm incl garage, built in 1990s), and we're considering building a small extension. The idea is to convert part of the lounge/dining spot into a bedroom/ensuite, and add 15sqm extension to recover some lounge area. This would also include a new kitchen (needed anyway) and a lot of new glazing.

Do I look around for a good builder and work with him? Or should I be getting in touch with an architect/designer? I'm completely hopeless with design, so I can't even visualise if my plan will work well.

Has somebody made some experiences with getting his bike to the lams list ?
How many chances would i have with a suzuki gsf600s from 1997 ? And how long will it take me ? How often do the cops looking up this list, when they pull you over ?
Thanks a lot for all information :)

BOOS Hurting Us

Brake Occasional Overuse Syndrome is hurting us.

It's when we panic because we are travelling what we perceive to be too fast, so we shove the brakes on in a corner, instead of trusting the bike to take the corner.

Most bikes are far, far more capable of going around corners than we are. We have to gain the confidence to allow bikes to flow in corners, instead of stabbing brakes on at lean angles beyond where braking is a good idea.

I've posted this in Wannabe & Newbie Bikers, as it's something that a lot of us learned not to do by losing skin in the process. With experience you can learn how much brake can be used at lean angle, and how gently to apply that braking. But when you're starting out it's a good idea to apply the Number 1 Rule on braking in corners. Don't.

Trust your bike. Let it do what it's designed to do. Head up, look through your corner, allow the bike to flow.

Of course, avoiding excess speed into corners is the first step to avoid having to brake. Amongst other good ideas.

Avoid BOOS.

Final-drive oil for Suzuki UZ125... where is the filler hole?

Hi,

Most scooters I've come across before have a final-drive oil-filler hole up top near the back wheel. But no sign of it on my UZ125. Does this scoot even have final-drive oil? Must do right? But spinning the back wheel it sounds pretty dry in there. Whats going on?

Cheers for any help

Customs Rant

I've bought a Back and Chest Protector from Revzilla.
It took 4 days to get to NZ.
Been held by Customs for a week pending them getting off their arses and doing an invoice.
They have not notified me, only found out by ringing NZ Post.
I have no issues paying the GST, just get pissed off with there additional charges, slothfullness and
the latest ...a "convenience charge" by Wespac of $2.30 total of $118.00

What a cosy little deal the Govt and Westpac have going.

24% worth of additional costs.

Revzilla do a flat rate of $35 US ( $48.00)

Clearly to avoid all the services on offer probably best next time to split the order to avoid the $400 threshold

Beer opened,rant over.

Beware of Protecta Insurance 5% discount offer

I recently used protecta's online quote system for calculating a motorcycle premium and made a mental note of the price. A few days later I saw an advertisment on Motomail's Web site advertising 5% off protecta motorcycle insurance. I followed the link and filled in the details for a quote. The quote with the 5% discount was exactly the same as the previous price as the "full" payment had been inflated. To check this I cleared my browser cookies and entered the information again from a fresh session. Without any "discount" the price was the same as the "discounted" price. The discount is a flat out lie. The attached file has the Motomail discount offer on the left and the non discounted standard quote on the right, all insurance details were identical for both quotes. I have reported it to the commerce commission.

why do bikes run better after a thrashing?

Some days the bike just runs nicer, smooth and zingy rather than lumpy and unzingy, I guess the humidity, temp of the day etc have an influence on how nicely the motor runs. But, the motor always feels really nice after I've thrashed it a bit, i.e. zingy.

So what is it that does this, what changes in the motor to make it feel like this?

Cheers

Hello just wondering what places In Auckland check for FI error codes? I have tried to get into dealer mode with no luck.

Thank you

Carrying a compressor in the tail bag.

I've had a compressor in the tail bag for about 8 years or so I guess without ever having to use it, apart from regular pressure adjustments. Until today.

Recently I put a new tyre on the back and had the shop install a right angle valve stem to make it easier on the odd occasion when I use a servo air pump. Just to match things up I put an Oxford after market similar device on the front.

This morning before going out I checked pressures which were all fine. Set off for the ride and within 3km was aware that all was not well with the front tyre. Bike wanted to fall over in any corner. So parked on the side of the road and checked the front pressure. Sure enough, only10psi. Had a look at the Oxford bit and found it a little loose on the valve stem. Air must have been pissing out of the valve. So tightened it back up and got to use the tail bag compressor on the road for the first time. All good after that.

What I don't quite comprehend in why the tyre hadn't leaked before now if the extension was not fully secure. Guess I will have to look at that every time from now on. Or at least until I get a real one put into the front.

'97 ZX9R - Whine at 80km/h

Hey,

Ive had my ZX9R since 2005. Back in 2012 it developed a whine at 80km/h, and it had some use between then and 2014, but was then put away till only a few weeks ago. Pulled it out again, dusted her off, fully cleaned out the tank and carbs/o-rings etc and it flew through its WOF like a champ.
However...
The noise at 80 is still there.
It doesnt matter what gear your in, what RPM, clutch in or out, the noise is there at 80km/h, +/- about 5km/h around that.
When you pull the clutch in, the whine sound volume increases.

I took it to Richards Motorcycles in Johnsonville (Wellington) back in 2013, and he spent the best part of a day on it, doing other bits too, but couldnt determine what the sound was. He thought it might be the speedo, however I have since eliminated that as the problem.
I then took it to TSS in the Hutt in Wellington in early 2014, and the bike came back worse than it went in, quite honestly. Not relating to this noise, as they couldnt figure out the noise at the time then, however the main point of it going in was for the B Service, not specifically for this sound issue.

It starts off as a sort of shimmering whine, not a constant shound, but a shh shh shh shh sort of sound, but it develops into a constant whine as the journey goes on. The Whine however isnt just a little whine, its like a full on soul destroying possessed beast, its rather loud, especially right on 80.
Did I mention its loud? It sounds like its all around you, so I have not been able to figure out where the sound is coming from.

Chain was one thought, and possibly wheel bearings, but clutch-in sort of rules out the front wheel bearing, but the back one or the sprocket carrier bearing could still be in play and the noise volume increases due to load changes.
Someone one mentioned it could be those rubber blocks in the back wheel or front sprocket, but I havent investigated there yet. It doesnt sort of seem like it would be chain or sprocket related though, it seems more like a bearing. I have adjusted the chain betwen a little loose and boarderline too tight, and the sound remains. I was hoping for it to highlight something, but it seems not.
Could it be the output shaft bearings on the transmission, given its speed related, and not RPM?
Could it be the clutch? The clutch overall works fine, no crunches between gears, there a thunk when you first click it into 1st from Neutral, but other than that it changes smooth. I think the thunk is fairly normal for these bikes.

So the Bike is a 1997, its done 51000km.

I dont want to sell the bike, its worth more to me than I would get for it, so I want to plod away and get it running right again.
If I was to take it into a shop, Im guessing it would be $1000 of time to figure out what the problem is, wit hno guarantee they would even find it (from previous experience) plus whatever parts it might end up being.

Any ideas I would greatly appreciate.

If there is anyone in Wellington who is a guru with bikes and would be happy to ride over one day and take it for a spin to help diagnose it, I would really appreciate it. Really wanting to get it sorted.
Short of this, I guess I just have to start buying bearings and replace things bit by bit, and hope that one of them solves the problem - but that is less than ideal.

Thanks

Suzuki GSX-R250 GJ72A Flywheel

Hey all,

I own an old 87 Suzuki GSX-R 250 and these things seem to have a pretty common issue where the magnets lining the flywheel fall to bits.
Unfortunately a brand new replacement is worth half as much as the bike and my faith in a second hand replacement holding together is dim.

I know a few of these ended up in New Zealand, and I know this issue has popped up a few times.
I was wondering if anyone has had any luck retrofitting a flywheel from another bike, likely similar era Suzuki?

Thanks in advance.

ZXR250 Electric Starting Issue

Morning Folks,

Recently got my hands on another ZXR250a, and i'm looking for some help / wondering if anyone has dealt with this previously. So, the ZXR has an issue with starting electrically. First of all, in neutral I need to pull in the clutch about 15% in to allow it to even crank, more or less pull, the clutch completely cuts it out as if it has a kill switch. My previous ZXR250a didn't have this and i'm wondering if anyone can share some input on how this works or how I can remove this. Once i'm in that sweet spot it cranks but doesn't want to start. Roll starts fine.

It does have an immobilizer and yes it was turned off while attempting to start the bike. But i'm wondering if this has something to do with it. I'm assuming there is some sort of safety switch on the clutch. Just purchased the bike yesterday so I will be doing some further testing tonight hopefully i.e battery voltage etc.

In the mean time I would greatly appreciate some input / info about my situation.

Thank you.

Kawaski Engine replacemnt tread

We i thought bore you lot again

Just a few words after googling the subject thought why not buy a modern ninja 250 engine for the old gpx kawaski.

o rahter have a newer engine as i can afford . and theres fewer old ones around.well didnt want have to buy another complete bike . i bidded on a few and missed out. glad as just take up more room. i got 9 bikes know.

When engine was found to be stuffed i looked the bike with destain piece crap. wasint enjoying second non honda purchase at all dark thoughts.
Where do i drop this of a cliff . terminal speed alright.

Know its my cool little ninja anyways enough bs.

Why posting is to update how few compatailty problems if any.

Only 3 . the starter diffrent , exhust clamps , crabs are smaller but the bigger ones fit. 1 mm diffrence

I just fitted engine yesterday thats about it 3 bolts done . had slight diffrence in the right top engine mount . on the gpx . its treaded into the hanger. not sure on the ninja will have to look at a pic.
Engine castings Crankcase all the same . cover that goes over the front sprocket diffrent . as wont fit . not a problem if you get that with your replacent engine. ditto , brought starter of the guy sold me the engine.
A Bike dismantler 500.00 for the engine . 450.00 plus starter.

so know i will have a working bike in the future with live reg. so i guess the
$450.00 lemon working out.

Am not sure how the headers seal though its just a flat surface . where am used to honda way recess and copper gasket got me bit stumped.

Not sure i can use old headers . the clamps i know dont fit the stud patern.
first job apart from connect few wires. rest where easy as .all the same basically. all connector blocks except maybe 2 3 single wires.

i can try find a 2009 nija wirking dia if colours dont seem to match. havent checked yet. only strated yesterday.

!s clean the carbs they bound to need it tank is pretty suspect.

2. finish of taking metal of the right top engine hanger . it touchs the top part of the rocker cover. stoping the top bolt lining up corectly.

I thought shit dont have a grinder anymore. then i just thought u got a hacksaw . so i cut down 20 mm small spacings 4 groves . then on a angle cut. each side to i had a grove . then used a flat bastard file . and just went to town. smothing it all .took a hour or so . taking back to the bike to check.
Need to fill the oil as it had to be drained for shiping.
How much and what kind i get not sure. prob 2 ltrs am thinking.

anyways i better get to my day job its a hoilday but got 600 junk mail to get out . maybe more.

So i cant devote all my time to this so bear with me.

Bikes VFR400R NC30 racebike - FAULTY

I am done with this - lost interest. You should assume the motor will need a full rebuild. If I was doing it I would take it out to 444cc because they go quite well and are reliable at that.

The chassis and running gear (even the tyres!) are good, its still a road bike with electric start (and Shorai battery...) but the motor is dorked. All four cylinders have low compression (round 50psi) - best case scenario is heads off and refresh, worst case is full motor rebuild. There has never been metal in the oil and even with low compression it did run so there's that.

What you are buying is the RVF400 NC35 17 inch rear wheel, the Ohlins shock, and the beautifully rebuilt and resprung front forks. All the rest of that stuff is attached to it to make it easier to roll around. It also comes with some spares - no motor parts but some airbox and stuff like that. Just had the carbs ultrasonically cleaned and new carb kits installed and a new rear tyre. The front is not overly used but is quite old now

Let me know what you want pictures of and I will add them. Edit: fucks sake: pay me $200k if you like but I would be easily swayed by $2000.

It looks nicer in the photos - it is due a repaint but like I say, I've lost interest

Well, heading down to my first Burt, surprised there isn't already a thread about it but didn't search too hard either... a whole bunch of us are heading down from whangarei and about, looking forward to doing some side excursions on the way down. First one in the SI will be the Cobb Dam rd, been told it is worth the trip! Any other suggestions from the locals? Molesworth and Rainbow are well on the cards but not new to me.
Any tips regarding the Burt in general? I know it has a different format now, as in, it has become more of a festival. Anyway, looking forward!

Service/mechanic

Looking for recommendations for a good mechanic to service the GN on/around the shore (the even though I can go a bit further afield if needed, city centre etc) I think it needs a bit of a tune up too, otherwise I’d do a basic service myself. My experience with cars is go to an independent and you get good value, go to the official dealer/service centre and Be prepared to pay through the nose, not sure if it’s the same on bike ?

All recommendations appreciated.

Dakar

I s'pose some of you are still on holiday? In the past there has tended to be a big build up to the Dakar - then when it starts almost total blackout. Well it's not like the bikes are coming past the cameras every two minutes or so as at a normal race.

Lyndon Poskitt is a Brit riding in the Dakar and he is fiming as he rides and he has a small team to edit his clips and get them up on the 'Net each day. He is entered in the Malle Moto class which means he has no mechanics, he does everything himself. Currently he is lying second in the class which is where he finsihed on his previous attempt.

At the time of writing I think he is about to ride stage 11 which will be episode 16. His coverage is the best look we have ever had at the Dakar and apparently his clips are getting more views than the official coverage. You'd expect Brits along the route to support him but it looks as if even the locals are holding up signs with his name now.

A search on Youtube for: Races to Places Dakar '18 will find his clips, each of which is about ten minutes long.

Or you can start at the beginning (usualy a good place to start).

Hi all,

Just arrived from the States for my tour around NZ. I pick up my bike today. I will staying in Auckland for a few more days and I am wondering about parking options. The Auckland Transport web site says parking for motorcycles is free in their car parks. I called and the person I spoke to said no, bikes pay just like cars. The lot I had checked out, Victoria St, definitely had bike spots marked out, albeit rather small spaces. Can anyone clarify? I called them to ask what bikes should do to park, take a ticket, drive around the arm, or what?

2000 PGO Bigmax

Im looking at doing a complete restoration, to a PGO Bigmax it ran/started prior to taking it apart but the owner said it was "sluggish" to get to 50kph, I want to strip all rust and repaint most metals (chassis etc.) , and also tweak somethings to get as much power from the engine as possible, such as changing the CDI to something like this: http://ift.tt/2FQa0Gr
Changing the air filter to perhaps a pod filter? and also been looking at these "boost kits" and if they are really worth it? http://ift.tt/2FQa499
One thing that I'm already wanting to do is the change out the old piston and gaskets.

I guess the question is: Is what do think is worth my time and/or money and what ideas i should scrap?

Cheers

Wonder how many there are in the series?
Have seen the cruiser riding high entering a R/H corner when a camper van makes an appearance sitting on the center line and the one that's just been aried was a bike entering a intersection in the inside lane that encounters diesel in their lane

When to replate cylinder

Recently I had a YZ-250 cylinder re-plated for a customer, after just a couple of outings he leaned down the methanol fuel mixture and stuck it. Being new to plated cylinders I do not know what damage to the plating is acceptable and at what point it becomes un usable...

Overall the cylinder cleaned up very well.... The exception is an area on the bridge between the boost port and transfer port where a small flake of plating has come off. The ring end gap is in the center of the void. 1st thought was to remove material from the sharp edges where the rings pass over the void.
If any one has experience running a cylinder with similar damage any input would be greatly appreciated.....

The picture view is from the base of the cylinder looking up on the intake side.
The void in the plating is on the left bridge as shown in the picture.

Honda SL100 restore - last started in 1992

My first bike has been lovingly stored in my mum's warm dry sleepout under a cosy blanket for the last 25 years. When it was last used it was running well, with the exception of an annoying electrical fault which caused the bike to cut out if you turned the handlebars hard left, or rode at top speed (70ish kph) for more than a few minutes. It would then refuse to start for 30 minutes or so, resulting in a lot of long walks home pushing said bike. I don't plan to use it and it's mighty 13hp but I'd like to get it running - what is required to get a bike that hasn't been started in 25 years going (aside from the obvious new battery)? Is getting it running actually the best thing for it long term or would it be better if I just left it alone?

Suzuki A50 Wiring Help Please

Good Afternoon folks. I have been trawling the web for days now trying to find a correct (for my year) wiring diagram for a Suzuki A50.

I believe it is either a 1970 or 1974 model but am unsure. I downloaded a service manual from manualslib.com which says it is for an A50/AS50 but while there are a lot of similarities the ignition wires are different colours as are the Magneto wires.
Despite being a total noob I have worked out quite in regard to the rest of it but I am unsure of where the magneto wires go to and how the rectifier gets integrated into the system.

If anyone can help me in any way that would be great. I am happy to provide any information you may need to assist or if you happen to have access to a wiring diagram that might match ny wiring that would be awesome. Im in based in Christchurch.

Thanks in advance

Steve

Coromandel Loop Update

Most people would have heard about the damage to the Thames coast road from the recent storm but if you haven't seen photos, some of them are here: http://ift.tt/2DgvBt3 . For anyone contemplating the full Loop, the Thames-Coro coast road is open but there are some really rough patches. Not too bad on a dual sport/adventure bike but can be a bit hairy on a normal road bike, especially if it's wet as there's a lot of mud and stones about. The southbound lane isn't as bad as the northbound one, which took the brunt of the storm. However, road conditions aside, it's all the stop-go and temporary traffic lights which take all the joy out of travelling on this stretch at present. Normally, it takes a bit under an hour to travel from Coromandel Town to Thames. It took one of my neighbours 1.75 hours a couple of days ago. This will vary depending on the level of reconstruction going on at the time.

If anyone is hell-bent on coming to the Peninsula in the next couple of months, the east coast road is fine. Not quite sure why you'd want to come at a time when the roads are choked with holidaymakers though  .

Cheers,

Geoff

Bikes Kawasaki Ninja 250 2008 - Ugly Duckling

Perfect LAMS bike, that’s had a short trip down the road but runs well. There’s a small niggle with the speedo which has existed since pitches 2 1/2 years ago where occasionally it doesn’t read.

The damage looks a lot worse than it was. It seems that the sun and the accident have caused the paint on the fairings to flake off. The bike itself is great to ride. There were only a few cracks of actual damage.

Flick me any questions either through the listing or here. Would like to see her sold before Saturday as we are moving. Currently in Mt Roskill.

Handlebars- YAMAHA DragStar

Hi guys,

I recently bought me a YAMAHA DragStar 400 cruiser. Without doing any research I thought it will be easy to customise the bike. My problem is I am quite tall and the bike comes with factory handlebars. The handlebars have bolts welded on to them and so I need to change the handlebars to maybe dragbars with some high risers to give me more leg room. Are you able to suggest someone or something to help me with.

North America Trip

First time posting so if I stuff this up don't cut my throat. I'm heading to the US in June for a couple of months of riding. Never been there before. I recently purchased a bike just out of New York and I intend to ride it across country to Los Angeles picking up Route 66 on the way. I'll ship the bike back to NZ. I'd like to get in contact with someone who can steer me in the right direction for things like how do I insure the bike over there, accommodation tips etc etc etc. Cheers.

KTM Duke 200, Footbrake system stopped working after changing lever

Hi, looking for a bit of experienced knowledge...

I was replacing the footbrake lever on my KTM Duke 200. As I was making the change I think I overextended the linkage (I heard a sucking/popping noise) and now the brake doesn't seem to respond to the linkage's movement. I've attached a photo. Have I depressured / devacuumed the brake line? Can I reverse this?

Thanks for any help!

Stewart Island Ferry - With a Motorsickle

Hey guys,

I'm planning my next big trip for mid Feb: Auckland to Bluff

I've got the idea of taking the ferry over to Stewart island, I've searched online and can't find anything about taking a motorcycle (or any vehicle) on the ferry.

Has anybody taken their bike over?

If so, how much? Things to see? etc

Cheers

It's a hot button topic I know, but today I went on a group ride :shit::shit::shit::shit:

No dogs were harmed :blink::woohoo::blink::woohoo:

We used forward observation, situational awareness, good positioning and SSV, made good progress, did some overtakes even :confused::laugh::confused:

No speeding tickets, although I did go thru a booze bus stop late today :bleh::eek::bleh::Police::bleh::eek::Police:

There were no evasive actions required, we must have been lucky :shutup::sunny::facepalm::shutup::sunny:

Bikes Honda Bros 400 lams approved

my partners been there done that with her riding life, her friends have all sold their bikes and now she is going to.
1988 honda 400 bros lams approved, stock exhaust good tyres pack frame and additional lower frame for top box or similar, this bike is in excellent condition with the only unsightly thing being the lclear coat on the engine external cases has deteriorated as seen in the piccies. These are all external components and to bring it back to as new i'd remove them and recoat them, with new gaskets
the is an excellent bike for shorter people in particulaar as with the narrow seat she was able to flat foot both feet on the ground whereas similar bikes with the same seat height and wider seats she wasn't (gs500 gpz500 for example) new warrant last month and done no miles since then, new battery last year and new spark plugs fitted.
protective wrap on tank also
We're in the hutt valley, any queiries just ask.,

price includes 6 months new rego, or near offer

New to the forum

I am new here and want to say hi to all forum members!
I rode bikes in Germany in the 80s and explored NZ's South Island on a small Suzuki in 1990, dressed in a pink! Jacket, woolly gloves and sneakers. It was great!! So, now 28 years later and I am still here and my son got his learners which made me think that I would like to get back on a bike too!
I have bought a small bike of Turners and I am in the process of getting it back on the road. I am technically minded and enjoy the challenge of 'battling the authorities' when it comes to restoring equipment.
See you around!

BUt I thought it is just too good an article to not bring to the fore again, and again, and again:

This is the article::yes::yes:

Braking in a corner - from Nick Ienatsch

I have posted this before, for the OP and others that may not have seen it..... IMO it is a long, but good read.

Cheers!

*************************************************

"If you have to stop in a corner, one of two things will happen. One, you will stand the bike up and ride it off the shoulder and into whatever is over there. Or two, you will lay the bike down and slide off the shoulder of the road. Braking is done before, or after a corner. The best thing to do before taking a corner is to grind the thought "I'm going to turn this corner" into your mind."

Hiya FZ1 lovers.
I’ve stewed for two days about the above quote taken from another FZ1OA thread...and finally decided to launch this thread. In past years I would have just rolled my eyes and muttered, “Whatever”…but not anymore. I want to tell you that there are measureable, explainable, repeatable, do-able reasons that make great riders great. And brake usage is at the very tippity-top of these reasons. It’ll save your life, it’ll make you a champion. It will save and grow our sport.
I’ll ask this one favor: Would you open your mind to what I’m about to write, then go out and mess around with it?
To begin: Realize that great motorcycle riding is more subtle in its inputs than most of us imagine. I bet you are moving your hand too quickly with initial throttle and brakes. Moving your right foot too quickly with initial rear brake. The difference between a lap record and a highside is minute, almost-immeasureable differences in throttle and lean angle. The difference between hitting the Camaro in your lane and missing it by a foot is the little things a rider can do with speed control at lean angle. Brakes at lean angle. Brakes in a corner.
Yes, a rider can brake in a corner. Yes. For sure. Guaranteed. I promise. Happens all the time. I do it on every ride, track or street. Yes, a rider can stop in a corner. In fact, any student who rides with the Yamaha Champions Riding School will tell you it’s possible. Complete stop, mid-corner…no drama. Newbies and experts alike.
There are some interesting processes to this sport, mostly revolving around racing. But as I thought about this thread, putting numbers on each thought made more sense because explaining these concepts relies on busting some myths and refining your inputs. Some things must be ingrained…like #1 below.

1)You never, ever, never stab at the brakes. Understand a tire’s grip this way: Front grip is divided between lean angle points and brake points, rear grip is lean angle points and acceleration points, lean angle points and brake points. Realize that the tire will take a great load, but it won’t take a sudden load…and so you practice this smooth loading at every moment in/on every vehicle. If you stab the brakes (um...or throttle...) in your pickup, you berate yourself because you know that the stab, at lean angle on your motorcycle (and bicycle, btw), will be a crash.

2)Let’s examine tire grip. If you’re leaned over at 95% (95 points in my book Sport Riding Techniques and fastersafer.com) of the tires’ available grip, you still have 5% of that grip available for braking (or accelerating). But maybe you only have 3%!!! You find out because you always add braking “points” in a smooth, linear manner. As the front tire reaches its limit, it will squirm and warn you…if that limit is reached in a linear manner.
It’s the grabbing of 30 points that hurts anyone leaned over more than 70 points. If you ride slowly with no lean angle, you will begin to believe that aggressiveness and grabbing the front brake lever is okay…and it is…until you carry more lean angle (or it’s raining, or you’re on a dirt road or your tire’s cold…pick your excuse). Do you have a new rider in your life? Get them thinking of never, ever, never grabbing the brakes. Throttle too…

3)If you STAB the front brake at lean angle, one of two things will happen. If the grip is good, the fork will collapse and the bike will stand up and run wide. If the grip is not-so-good, the front tire will lock and slide. The italicized advice at the beginning was written by a rider who aggressively goes after the front brake lever. His bike always stands up or lowsides. He’s inputting brake force too aggressively, too quickly...he isn't smoothly loading the fork springs or loading the tire. He may not believe this, but the tire will handle the load he wants, but the load must be fed-in more smoothly…and his experience leads to written advice that will hurt/kill other riders. “Never touch the brakes at lean angle?” Wrong. “Never grab the brakes at lean angle?” Right!
But what about the racers on TV who lose the front in the braking zone? Pay attention to when they lose grip. If it’s immediately, it’s because they stabbed the brake at lean angle. If it’s late in the braking zone, it’s because they finally exceeded 100 points of grip deep in the braking zone…if you’re adding lean angle, you’ve got to be “trailing off” the brakes as the tire nears its limit.

4) Radius equals MPH. Realize that speed affects the bike’s radius at a given lean angle. If the corner is tighter than expected, continue to bring your speed down. What’s the best way to bring your speed down? Roll off the throttle and hope you slow down? Or roll off the throttle and squeeze on a little brake? Please don’t answer off the top of your head…answer after you’ve experimented in the real world.
Do this: Ride in a circle in a parking lot at a given lean angle. That’s your radius. Run a circle or two and then slowly sneak on more throttle at the same lean angle and watch what your radius does. Now ride in the circle again, and roll off the throttle…at the same lean angle. You are learning Radius equals MPH. You are learning what throttle and off-throttle does to your radius through steering geometry changes and speed changes. You are learning something on your own, rather than asking for advice on subjects that affect your health and life. (You will also learn why I get so upset when new riders are told to push on the inside bar and pick up the throttle if they get in the corner too fast. Exactly the opposite of what the best riders do. But don’t believe me…try it.)
Let me rant for a moment: Almost every bit of riding advice works when the pace is low and the grip is high. It’s when the corner tightens or the sleet falls or the lap record is within reach…then everything counts.
“Get all your braking done before the turn,” is good riding advice. But what if you don’t? What if the corner goes the other way and is tighter and there’s gravel? It’s then that you don’t need advice, you need riding technique. Theory goes out the window and if you don’t perform the exact action, you will be lying in the dirt, or worse. Know that these techniques are not only understandable, but do-able by you. Yes you! I’m motivated to motivate you due to what I’ve seen working at Freddie’s school and now the Champ school…
I’m telling you this: If you can smoothly, gently pick-up your front brake lever and load the tire, you can brake at any lean angle on and FZ1. Why? Because our footpegs drag before our tires lose grip when things are warm and dry. It might be only 3 points, but missing the bus bumper by a foot is still missing the bumper! If it’s raining, you simply take these same actions and reduce them…you can still mix lean angle and brake pressure, but with considerably less of each. Rainy and cold? Lower still, but still combine-able.

5)So you’re into a right-hand corner and you must stop your bike for whatever reason. You close the throttle and sneak on the brakes lightly, balancing lean angle points against brake points. As you slow down, your radius continues to tighten. You don’t want to run off the inside of the corner, so you take away lean angle. What can you do with the brakes when you take away lean angle? Yes! Squeeze more. Stay with it and you will stop your bike mid-corner completely upright. No drama. But don’t just believe me…go prove it to yourself.

6)Let’s examine the final sentence in the italicized quote. The best thing to do before taking a corner is to grind the thought "I'm going to turn this corner" into your mind.
No, that’s not the best thing. It’s not the worst thing and I’m all for positive thinking, but we all need to see the difference between riding advice and riding techniques. This advice works until you enter a corner truly beyond your mental, physical or mechanical limits. I would change this to: The best thing to do before taking a corner is to scan with your eyes, use your brakes until you’re happy with your speed and direction, sneak open your throttle to maintain your chosen speed and radius, don’t accelerate until you can see your exit and can take away lean angle.
7)Do you think I’m being over-dramatic by claiming this will save our sport? Are we crashing because we’re going too slowly in the corners or too fast? Yes, too fast. What component reduces speed? Brakes. What component calms your brain? Brakes. What component, when massaged skillfully, helps the bike turn? Brakes. If riders are being told that they can’t use the brakes at lean angle, you begin to see the reason for my drama level. When I have a new rider in my life, my third priority is to have them, “Turn into the corner with the brake-light on.”

I’ve said it before: This is the only bike forum I’m a member of. I like it, I like the peeps, I like the info, I love the bike. Could we begin to change the information we pass along regarding brakes and lean angle? Could we control our sport by actually controlling our motorcycles? If we don’t control our sport, someone else will try. Closed throttle, no brakes is “out of the controls”. Get out there and master the brakes.
Thanks, I feel better.

Tf125 no spark

Have a 90s tf125 no spark. Had been sitting a few years started up second kick came back to it the next day and it ran very rough so changed plug then no spark at all. Tested stator and cdi and coil coil had nothing running through it so replaced with one off a working bike but still no spark have gotten another cdi will put on. Could it be that the magneto has shit itself from sitting to long and is not putting out the right amperage cheers.

Scooters Are Hard (er) To Ride In A Test

I had a chap yesterday arrive to do his Basic Handling Skills Test with his own 150cc scooter. CVT transmission. That's an auto transmission.

He thought it would be easier than riding our GN125 as there was no need to change gears. Well I can tell you, CVT transmissions have challenges of their own, and the BHST is no doddle on a CVT bike.

When you throttle on, there's a slight lag, as the CVT winds itself up and gets going. When it does, especially on bigger bikes, it takes off quite quickly. At the other end of the scale, when you throttle off, there's significantly less deceleration, so the brakes get far more use. Basically, your throttle control needs to be better on a CVT bike than a GN, as the GN is seasier to maintain constant progress on, without accelerating or decelerating.

Add to this the smaller wheels, and they tip into corners more quickly. The one yesterday had less lean angle than a GN as well.

Don't get me wrong, I like CVT bikes. I rode the one yesterday, and it wasn't hard to ride. I rode the course and stages on the bike yesterday, and It's quite a cool bike. But it has it's own set of challenges.

Just don't go thinking it's easy to do a test on an auto bike. It's not hard, it's just different. But it's also not easy.

Scooters Are Hard (er) To Ride In A Test

It Won't Happen To Me, I don't need to change.

Sickening.

Certainly I make no reference to those have departed in the recent days and distant past. I post this in the (potentially vain) hope that it might open some eyes.

Paper Article (1).jpg

As a society we live with the belief that "it won't happen to me."

Often this belief is reinforced by the lack of adverse outcome, which teaches us, subconsciously, that whatever we have done is safe.

For example, I'm driving home from work, my phone sitting face up on the passengers seat. The phone rings, I look down, and there on the screen of the phone is a picture of my wife peering back at me. It's my wife calling. Several things go through my mind; if I answer that, I might get a ticket, I might kill someone (the ads say so), I might run over a child. All adverse outcomes. Then I realise that not answering a call from my wife carries a greater adverse outcome, so answer, quickly dispose of the call, and put the phone back down. Result? No adverse outcome. I've subconsciously reinforced the belief that what I did is safe.

The next time the phone rings, It's just that little bit easier to answer, based on my previous experience. After 400 calls, I'll be snap chatting, instagramming, facebooking, updating my work calendar.........you get the idea.

Same with other, motorcycle related behaviours. Those who don't wear gloves, and haven't for years, won't, because it's not going to happen to them. They are a good rider, riding for 30 years, never had a crash (that they will admit to), it won't happen to them. They don't need safety gear, it's not going to happen to them. No, this is not a rant about safety gear, this was just an example of historically reinforced risk behaviour.

But each day in NZ it happens to someone. I've attended thousands of crashes over the years, and if I had asked each driver involved if they knew their crash was going to happen, of course they would have said no. Because of they knew it was going to happen, they would have prevented it.

We don't know when it's going to happen to us, because if we knew that, we'd prevent it. We just don't think it'll happen to us.

We see no reason to maintain good following distances, as we've been following too close behind our riding mates for years, with no adverse outcome. Nobody can tell us to maintain a legal or better following distance. We've been lane splitting for years, legally or illegally, with no adverse outcome. Nobody can tell us it's a marginal idea. We change lanes without head checking, because we've been doing it for years and never had a problem, where's the need to change that little number?

How about we front foot stuff, and consider that however unlikely, no matter how flash a rider we are, it just might happen to us. Imagine that. We have the chance to change our outcomes. Wow, revelation.

Just a wee bit of a rant, as I've heard so much about how everything is someone else's fault. Police's fault, gubbermits fault, foreign tourists fault, white-van-man's fault. It seems everything is someone else's fault. The discussion about fault means nothing to your broken arm, broken leg or ruptured spleen. Fault means little when you are the victim of someone else's mistake, let alone your own.

And I repeat, I make no judgement regarding the crashes in the article. Poor beggars. But I bet they didn't think it was going to happen to them.
