Hampton Downs storage

I'm thinking of renting a garage at Hampton Downs to store my bike in. But, being poor I can't justify the whole cost of a garage for just one bike.
Solution, buy 5 more bikes to fill it up or find some friends who also want to store bikes at Hampton and split the cost.
Quick call to Hampton tells me a garage is about $400 per month, so if we pop four bikes in there then it's about $100 per bike per month.

Any takers ?

Rex Tillerson's visit

Given the recent blows to NATO administered by Trump, would anyone like to speculate whether Tillerson is coming to tell us not to rely on the US supporting ANZUS ?
Or alternatively, that we must increase our defence spending ?

Bike cleaning topic

Hi guys, I am new to here and also newbie of riding.

Recently I am looking for a cleaning product to clean my bike, it's Yamaha R3, I found the product that called MOTOMUCK from Trademe.
After I did some research, some of you guys are using Dynamo. I am not sure is it safe for the bikes? And does it works well as the bike cleaner?

Making sure is this the one? http://ift.tt/2rnYD3w

My friend recommend me to use Muc-Off, but that shit is quite expensive.

Newbie need you guys help. :first::first::first:

Another near miss blathering....

Southbound on SH1 towards Wairakei a perfect storm of otherwise negligible happenings brewed up to create a holy heck that could have ended badly moment yesterday morning.
Sure many will know the location, big long sweeping left hander just past Palmer mill road, northbound passing lane on other side of road.
Had been caught up to a dithering 4wd that of course suddenly found speed on the downhill but was the type of driver you didn't want to sit behind. The two of us caught a trio of vehicles, two of which had trailers.
After round the left I saw ample clear road ahead to effect a safe and legal pass of the 4wd to set me up to get the other three on the last southbound passing lane before taupo junction.

Passing the 4wd I got to pull in behind the ute at the back of the trio who are all a bit close for me to want to pass any further here. Suddenly the ute jams his brakes and pulls left. At first I just think hes being an ahole or needlessly helpful when I quickly notice all three of them are emergency braking because their mate up front in light truck towing small trailer has dropped an unsecured ramp which is dragging on the ground behind it.
Thank F$%& the 4wd I just passed was paying attention as it was very quickly turning into a DR sandwich.
Yes there was room withen in the lane to just gas it and nail it but would have resulted in excessive speed gain in a highly policed area and an aggressive looking pass to the *555 brigade.
All in all a real nothing of a situation but a good reminder how anything can happen out there anytime and how the slightest of negligence can initiate an event.

Help / advise 2015 WR450F top end rebuild

I think its time to do a top end, on my 2015 Yamaha WR450F, Ive decided to do it myself, It looks relatively simple enough. I have all the tools needed to do the job, but want to know is it a simple matter of ordering a top end kit or are there things to look out for before ordering anything.
Also does one go with the genuine or GYTR, looking at MotoXparts they have 3 piston Kits JE, Meteor and Wossner from $220 to $248 will still have to chase up a gasket set.
Which would you recommend, would I have to re-shim. do I check before I pull top end down then if need be order the correct shims or do that after the new top is put back together.

Thanks John.....:wait::corn:

Should new tyres really be that slippery!!

Hi all, first-time poster - long time reader. I am seeking some advice on new tyres. Last week I took my SV650 into the bike shop for a new set of tyres. When I picked it up the mechanic warned me to "take it easy as new tyres can be slippery". I thanked him for his warning and sage advice and hopped on my bike and rode it 20m to the nearest interseciton and stopped at the stop sign to turn right. There was nothing coming from either direction and so slowly eased the clutch out to pull forward into the middle of the road. As I got to the middle of the road the back wheel suddenly lost traction and slid out to the left. As I instictively turned into the slide to try to correct it the bike jerked back to the left, flipping me off over the front and onto the road with my bike crunching down next to me on it's left side. The road was dry and there was no visible oil etc although I wonder whether the white painted centreline caused a loss of traction. It felt like all of sudden I was riding on ice or soap or something. I picked myself and my bike up and wheeled it to the side of the road where I regained my composure before doing the walk of shame back to the bike shop to book the bike in for repairs. I honestly don't think I could have 'taken it any more easy' than I did pulling out of the intersection unless I was to get off and walk the damn thing home. I use my bike for commuting and have never been into any sort of stunts or wheel spins etc so please don't think I was some sort of idiot who tried to drop of burn out or something - I simply pulled out from the intersection and the bike whipped out from under me. I have now made an insurance claim wth the cost of repairs almost reaching the cost of my insured value of $5K and so running the risk of having the bike written off...but I loved that bike and don't want to lose it!! Can any of you experienced and knowledgable bikers out there advise me of where I stand in terms of any responsibility from the bike shop to ensure that my bike can actually be ridden on new tyres? or whether there is some reason that I am misssing that caused this to happen? The bike shop response was great in the sense that they checked I was ok and offered me short-term loaner bike, but I am still left wondering how this can happen and what I could have possibly done to avoid it. I have been riding for about 5 years, had my full license for about the last 3 years and have had the SV650 for about 2 years and never had any issues with it.
One thing that I also wonder about is that originally the bike shop owner quoted me for Conti Road Attack 2 tyres which I was happy to buy, but then when I arrived to pickup the bike he told me that they were unable to get the Road Attack tyres and so upgraded me for free to a much better and more expensive tyre - which he called a Z8 ?? I figured I was getting a great deal so thanked him for the upgrade. Could this have been why the tyres reacted the way they did?? Any replies would be greatly appreciated. The bike shop have been helpful to date and I hope the insurer doesn't sink my hope of getting my bike back.

Getting bags onto a 2000 TU250

Hi everyone,
First post and first bike, so pardon any stupid questions.
I've just picked up a 2000 Suzuki TU250 (AKA Grass Tracker, I think), and I'd like to get some sort of luggage on there. The bike doesn't currently have a rack on it. Any ideas on what I can do there?
Cheers!

Vehicle on fire.

Having had a vehicle on fire myself, i had to laugh at the hopelessness of my mates story today.
His nephew was going down their section in urquarts bay, whangarei heads, on the old diesel beach tractor, to pull a boat out of the briny. Anyway it is an old ugly shitter that starts badly but barely gets by otherwise. It had just been started with a can of start ya bastard and on the downhill run the can rolled over the battery terminals and just erupted in a huge sheet of flame with sound effects! Mikey jumped off immediately, with burns to his hands only, and they stood and watched the blazing tractor chug on over towards the neighbours house! Fortuneately a passing beach goer came running over with a fire extinguisher that not only put out the fire, but stopped the motor as well.

Hello

Hi, my names Michael, I ride a Honda Spada, have had about a year, nothing exciting about it really, also have a pair of xr600r's that im rebuilding and modifying one a bit with high comp piston, hot cam, fcr carb ect, probably a bit overkill to learn on so will probably look for a xr250r. Only got the 600s because they were almost free

Bikes 2016 Aprilia Tuono Factory

Sadly I need to sell my 2016 Aprilia Tuono Factory that I bought new in October 2016.
Obviously this means that the bike will come with the balance of the factory warranty...up to October 2018 (same with WOF).

Suspension set up by Dave Moss.

Comes with amazing sounding exhaust and tail tidy plus all standard factory parts.

Bike is in amazing condition as you would expect at its kms.

I have treated the paint work with Dura-Seal to ensure that its finish stays in excellent condition and makes cleaning quick and easy.

The performance of its unrivalled, revamped V4 has been increased to 1100 cc and 175 hp; more efficient to ride thanks to its revamped chassis and the further development of the already exceptional APRC electronics systems package, but at the same time more convenient and even safer for road use. It has all the latest electronics including a quick shifter, wheelie control and launch control. This bike is in immaculate condition and has engine protectors, bobbins and small adjustable hand levers fitted.
Factory installed Ohlins shocks, Ohlins steering stabilizer and Ohlins forks.

Any radiator flush better than others?

Giving me ole Commodore a birthday in a couple of weeks so am ordering some parts. It has the standard V6 blown inlet gasket some the radiator is sludgy.

Which is the best product for a clean up in there? She is not overheating but the heater is not up to much so I guess the core of the heater radiator is clogged.

Gsf 250 loss of power and won't start

Was rideing bike and started to hear a weird rubbing sound when I took power off. Had to keep going as was on motorway, bike then lost power, managed to get off to safe area. Thought it might have been fuel but had half tank. Tried to start and turned over twice and and then nothing. All lights etc cut out now like a dead flat battery. Am not a mechanic so have no idea what went wrong. Any ideas what may have happened?

Go Pros create unsafe riders

Had a guy on a course today wearing his Go Pro on his helmet.

He tells me he has been cut off 3 times this week, and he's sick of it, so he's got a Go Pro. Like, that'll make a difference.

Out on the course today a guy U-turned across our path. Our man could have backed off and avoided it by miles, but he insisted on riding close to the U-turner and filming it, complete with expletives.

So, from what I can see, using that Go Pro has caused him to ride like a dick.

Am I wrong?

Almost killed by a Bus this morning

I just want to have a rant and let everybody know about an incident I had this morning.

At approximately 7:35 this morning in Northcote on the North Shore at the intersection of Raleigh Road and Lake Road, I was indicating to turn right to go around the round about on to Lake Road and proceeded to do so. As I was making the turn some complete and utter imbecile of a bus driver (driving a Ritchies bus) started to pull out right in front of me as I was making the turn. They were turning right to go down the other direction of Lake Road towards the Northcote shops. Not only did they pull out in front of me they didn't even break or attempt to break and as I passed the clown almost plowed right into me. It was only quick reactions on my part in which I sped up and did an emergency counter steer to dodge the bus that saved me. I swear I missed it by half a foot at most. A more inexperienced rider would have probably panicked and braked and got hit and probably run over.

I needed to go to work and to be honest was a little shocked so I just beeped and kept on going. I regret it now I should have turned around and got his details at the very least (or given him a bit of aggro), I would have definitely done so if I didn't need to be at work.

I think I will send Richies Bus company an email tomorrow. What do you guys think?

Have you had any similar experiences? Almost been murdered by a bus driver?

FMF - noisy!

Hi all,

I have a 2010 DR650 that came with an FMF exhaust. It's LOUD, and I'm sure that's to be expected, but after over 15000kms on it, my ears are looking for a new owner (and that's with earplugs!). Not to mention everyone at the campsites looking at me sideways when I ride in.

I can't figure out if the FMF originally came with some sort of baffle - all I see is a black hole when I look down it. Any chance there's something I can install that with not affect the air/fuel/exhaust ratio, but will make it a little quieter? I've even had the cops tell me to change my exhaust. I have no idea what I can purchase, and I don't know the exact model of the exhaust...

Thanks!
Ryan

Oil change

Doing my fist ever oil change this weekend and was wondering 2 things. Should I get an oil filter from a Yamaha dealer or will one from Supercheap Auto be ok?

Secondly, the previous owner was using 10w-40 but I checked in the owners manual and it Ai ply says API service "SE", "SF" type or equivalent. I have no idea what these are? I've googled them and they look to be the quality of the oil? Could I not use better oil like SJ or SN?

Thanks

Been away so long I hardly knew the place..

gee it's good to be back home....

I'm not a new member, but it's been so bloody log since I irritated people on KB I might as well be a noob. My name is David, and I'm a bikeaholic.

Since I was last here, my T Bird was written off when a woman in a nasty BMW turned across in front of me. I loved that bike more than life itself, so I bought a Trophy 1200 frame with live rego and modified it to fit the running gear from my T Bird Sport, so I own a 1995 Trophy 1200 that looks like a 2004 T Bird Sport. I haven't ridden her for a while (long story), but I have been riding a bike. Kind of. For all of 2016 I rode a Honda NBC110 Postie bike, covering nearly 20,000 kms delivering mail.

At first I thought I'd hate it, but I started having FUN! I learnt how to pull cracker wheelies (using judder bars), dragged my panniers so often I ended up losing mail from the holes I wore in them, holed a piston and only came off once (not paying attention).

KB doesn't look like it's changed a bit, so it's good to be back.

Been away so long I hardly knew the place..

Recommendations for bike or scooter

Hey folks - long time reader, first time poster here. Looking for bike recommendations after moving house and rediscovering my dislike for the Auckland bus system.

Primarly looking for a commuter, but some versatility would be nice. I've ridden a couple of bikes in the past, but never bothered progressing off my learners, so needs to be LAMS approved. Also I'm a bigger guy (6'3" 120kg) so am looking for a larger frame and enough substance to get up hills and get away at the lights.

A workmate has strongly recommended I get a scooter and (reluctantly) I think he might be right. It's a 15 min ride with no motorways, so more storage, less/lighter gear and auto-transmission could be a good fit for my requirements.

On the bike side I was eying up an MT07, or maybe an SV650. For scooter options I have no idea... needs to be nimble for weaving, but still have enough power... is a Vespa 300 any good?

So questions:
1. For my situation would you recommend a bike or a scooter?
2. Which Bike/Scooter would you recommend?

R6 First Start Fail - Help!

Hey guys,

So we got the engine in today and got it running, however it is constantly running around 3krpm. The choke is off and the idle adjust screw is all the way out.

Any ideas guys?

R6 First Start Fail - Help!

This seasons mice...

We've been here nearly 20 years now and never had a mouse problem. Possibly something to do with our breeding pedigree cats.....

But this winter we seem to have an invasion of bold bastard mice. Even seen in the catteries.
They're obviously fat and slow as even one of our stud boys caught one.

Any other South Island members noticed an increase in numbers - and yes, I know there's a good beech mast this autumn - but I doubt if there's a Beech within 80k's of us....

Oil change

I'm going to be doing my first oil change today and got a few questions.

I've recently got a Yamaha Scorpio and also its service manual, but looking up how to do an oil change in the book, I can't find out what size O-ring I need for the oil drain bolt. I guess I could take it off and while it's draining go to a parts store, but surely I can find the size out before taking it off?

Also, with the oil filter replacement, it says to clean with solvent. Is kerosene ok to use to clean? Do. Just buy a new oil filter or clean the old one?

Thanks a lot

Service manual

I've just bought my first bike- a Yamaha Scorpio sx-4w and I'm trying to find the service manual for it, but all the threads I see on here, the links done work anymore.

I've seen a few for scribd but that's not a PDF version, nor is it free...?

Does anybody have a copy please?

Thanks

Replacing mirrors because of some scumbag! Please help!!

I need to find out where I can buy mirrors in Christchurch? Some drunk cnuts ripped the mirrors off. The sticks they sit on are still attached, it looks like they've been ripped from the ball joints.

I need to get a location (apart from Trevor Price Yamaha) where I can get some replacement mirrors for my Yamaha Scorpio 225 (first bike, less than a week old!)

Thanks

Kiwi commuters

Hi all,

I'm busy sitting at the airport about to return to SA from a holiday in NZ. Haven't slept since yesterday [emoji42]

Just wondering to myself, during the couple of days I was in Auckland and surroundings, I didn't see many motorcycle commuters. Any ideas why? I would think with that traffic it would be more popular. (As far as I know lane splitting is legal).

Btw, beautiful county you have. Kiwis are super friendly too.

Where to get basic parts

Hi group. I am rebuilding a 1980 Yamaha rd350 lc and have so far relied on getting parts overseas. However I feel there must be suppliers of the disposable things like clutch and throttle cables for old bikes here in nz. I am after pattern parts not expensive originals. Who do people use for these sorts of spares for older bikes?

Anybody using an auto clutch for trail riding?

What are your thoughts? Im thinking about one for my KDX when I give it a piston.

The Future of Work

Went to a Humanity and Machine Symposium today.

There were some good speakers, from Facebook to John Spence.

Seemed to think that Dairy, Tourism and Wine was not ever going to build a good economy and need to get a techy educated

population. NZ is too far away but suited an on-line economy.

One of the speakers who I gather probably did all right in the tech world said he had sold everything, lived using Uber, Air B

and B, some on line credit bitcoin app and Facebook.

They say 30% of jobs will be done by machines by 2025.

Example was self flying plane, robots unloading and drones delivering, you have probably seen the burger flipper robot, and a

lot of driving jobs.

I do wonder with the reduced tax base who will actually be buying all the stuff that robots can then do?

Will robots pay tax?

Millennials will probably be calling more of the shots with not wanting to do what boring old Baby Boomers did....they want

'meaningful jobs", " work life balance" ," Nice Work Spaces" and so on.....

The Tesla they had on display interested me until I asked the only important question I ever ask about cars....how much?

$180 000.00...... could be a while till it drops to my 10 years and $10K A to B car purchase price limit.

The Pinot Gris and Asian/Italian Fusion food was quite nice

Are property investors the scourge of the earth?

So Andrew Little is the latest to have a crack at property investors, and while I personally think Labour don't have a snowballs chance in hell of getting elected, as I fall into the general category it's got me thinking.....

http://ift.tt/2rp5Ahp

Is it really small time property investors who are driving up prices in the housing market?

If not investing in property, what else should people be putting their money into? (Blue chip finance springs to mind...)

Are the tax rebates of reportedly $150m a year that bad?

Given the $1-2k tax rebate per year on the average rental, could the gubbermint own, manage and maintain a house for someone to rent for the same money, or would the taxpayer end up footing the bill for the difference?

The government (and seemingly the current opposition) want more houses built, will removing negative gearing increase or decrease the number of houses being built?

Following on from the above, if the desire is for more houses then why was the tax rebate for depreciation of new rental houses scrapped, given that the accumulated depreciation was taxable when the house was sold?

Express away........

1984 Suzuki PE 400 X Tank wanted..

As per ze title. My mate has resurrected his venerable PE 400X, 84 I believe, only to find the plastic tank has a leaky crack. He's welded it but still on the look out for a replacement. His shocks are rooted, too. They go down but are reluctant to come back up.

Typical old persons problems, unwanted leaks and trouble getting back up when you drop a $1.

Any help much appreciated, I'm hoping some VMX riders may spy this and put the word out.

I doubt the year matters and a 250 tank may fit but would need to be compared.

Cheers in anticipation of tank inundation.. Must be heaps about.;)

Drift Innovation - Action Camera Discount

Hey Kiwi Biker members,

I'm considering importing Drift Innovation action cameras from the supplier (ex-company I worked for) in bulk as they have just released the new Drift Ghost 4K model. It is not well known here in NZ however a leading action camera in the UK due to the rotatable image etc.

Would any members be interested in purchasing if I could get a 20-25% discount? They retail for $479 NZD. Im keen to get a few for friends however shipping costs and import fees are too high for 1-4 units.

New bike often stalls when pulling clutch

Not sure if this is a mechanical/electrical/rider problem.

I'm a new rider and just got my new new to me Yamaha Scorpio 225. When I am riding in th cold (usually on a night, although I've only had the bike a week) and pull my clutch to change gears, sometimes the bike stalls. I can't find a pattern to when it does it apart f Om it seems to happen more at night and doesn't seem to do it when I ride it in the middle of the day or morning.

It happened 2 or 3 times tonight in a 15 minute ride home from work.

It stalls when the clutch is fully pulled so I don't think it's me that's stalling the bike. I loose all power and the engine turns off. It usually happens if I pull the clutch back for longer than usual.

Not sure if it's related but the dipped headlights don't work, only the main beam so I always ride around with my main beam on, and when I increase the revs the light b comes brighter.

Can anyone think of any possibilities?

Thanks

Bikes AJS Model 20 "Spring Twin"

AJS Model 20 "Spring Twin" In excellent condition for age. Rebuilt by previous owner and owned for less than a year. Since then I've spent $600 on re-wiring by Wgtn's Boyle Kawasaki. Unknown kms. Runs and starts easily. Warranted and registered.
Near new tyres and good running gear. New clutch cable. Has usual English bike issues such as marking it's spot with oil. A bit of wear and tear in the form of cracked plastic logos on the tank, parking light lense cracked (by headlight) chipped paint on one mudguard and some delamination of the chrome on the header pipes near the cylinders. Comes with an old manual and a pillion seat.
A super fun reliable classic that I'm not riding as much as I should, so am selling to get a dual purpose bike that I can use for hunting and commuting. Open to swaps for a registered KTM or DRZ400.

Electric Vehicles getting really fast

http://ift.tt/2qHlF5L
So an electric car now holds the Nur road legal record, how long until we see electric bikes starting to do the same to our road legal superbikes?

I asked myself that question and then asked google and apparently it has already happened:
http://ift.tt/2qHebQo

That's a seriously quick bike and no way near as heavy as I though it would be at 225kgs. As much as I like the sound of a bike I'd love to open the taps on one of these. Charge times aren't too unreasonable either. I think a charging station at a few of the towns along the Coro GP would do you well when you stop to clear the head a bit, is this our future?

Exhaust header gaskets

Do I need to use steel/copper that you get from the manufacturers/workshops or can I use ones you can get from Supercheap etc?

Have taken the header pipes off an old GN250 and want to replace the gaskets (I am assuming none were on there in the first place unless they are really jammed in there and you cannot get them out easily)

Oh, based in AKL on the shore if that is of any use....cheers

Flashing your headlights to warn of cops

How come no one does this any more? Flash your high beams at oncoming cars to warn of a cop or speed trap that is.
Bikers are pretty good at warning each other but when I'm in the car almost no one warns ya. I try to warn people a km or two after but I feel like I'm one of the rare few. 5 or 10 years ago a lot more people did it but now no one does. Why?

Oily Spark Plugs

Hey guys,

So I've finally received the new engine for the 01 R6, it came all the way from Canada.

Now we've already encountered a problem, I took out the spark plugs and there is oil around the electrode. There's a little bit on 1 and 2 and it's swimming in oil on 3 and 4.

My guess is buggered rings?

Sounds silly but the engine was shipped upside down, would this have anything to do with it?

We haven't started it yet so not sure how it'l go.

The engine has 40,000km.

Cheers

Bad Back?

I have been putting up with a massively fucked back for the last ten years and a very damaged lumbar vertebrate for about eight of those years. It has degenerated over those years from giving me big shit a couple of times a year to the last couple or three years living with medium grade pain every day spiking to intense pain whenever it decided I was in need of a wake up call. After a small fall about four months back it went off the scale and after weeks of grade eight to ten pain and me being cast on the lounge floor 24/7 for three weeks and shoveling back handfulls of tramadol which didn't even take 10% of the pain away it settled down to me having to put up with five to six grade pain every day for the last three months. Couldn't work, lost lots of grands and my wife had to float our boat on her own with her small business.
Being a few months off sixty and having played and worked hard since I was 14 I kind of accepted this as payback from the mortal frame. I was getting very depressed thinking that I was fucked and would be like this from here til the end. Not being able to ride or race was another very freaky and oppressive thing on my mind as well.
I risked the pain and danger of doing more damage racing at Methven at Easter this year. Even I thought I was a dumb cunt but I did anyway, 'cos that what dumb cunts do.

The story changes here.

Spyda was down to do his thing with a microphone and we were chatting about stuff when he told me of his back problem and his use of an 'inverter', and it's benefits. I was actually thinking wires and electrics when he said 'inverter', him being a sparky and Spyda etc. I was envisaging him hooking up a wire to his hip and earthing it with a wire up his date or something similar.

Anyway I checked out the inverter thing on google and was enlightened as to what the apparatus was. Some were expensive and some were Chinese. Being a complete cynic I opted for an ex shop demo model, Chinese and lots and lots cheaper than the other ones. $160 I paid for what is usually $200 new in a flat cardboard box.

I had difficulty just getting in my truck to do the 150k round trip to town to pick it up. I was that sore when I got home I had to lay on the floor for half an hour before we got the already assembled thing out of my truck and into the kitchen. The cynic adjusted the table to his height and locked his ankles into the leg hanging device and tilted himself back to a 45 degree tilt and lay there for all of five minutes. I felt some small movements in the spine but nothing significant. I righted myself got out and stood up. No fucking pain, none whatsoever. The cynic thought that this was great but how long before it raced back to fuck with him...five minutes, an hour?. Well that was last Friday evening and I have been like a rejuvenated little boy since and my problem has been alleviated to the extent that I have forgotten that I even had a bad sciatic and fucked hip problem. I have been doing things that I could not even entertain in my wildest dreams just a week ago. A week ago I could not get to my shed without the aid of crutches.

I've been on my shed roof sealing leaks that were fucking me off so bad but couldn't get up there to fix, the eighty meter monstrosity of a hedge is now looking good, I'm off to unload 200 meters of framing timber from my trailer for my next job shortly before I go down and do some repairs on the local pub roof and I'm then throwing the bike on the trailer to take out to Ruapuna to race tomorrow. I'm back with a smile and it's just like I was transported back ten years to when my back was just a working back. This has not cured anything just made it all go away.

I can't believe that my encounter with Spyda would be a life changer and I can't believe that the specialists, doctors, osteos and physios over that ten year period did not tell me about inversion tables. But the cynic in me knows why. Something to do with money, I'd say. Close to $200 for a 45 minute visit to a specialist and 50 bucks for quarter hour doc and physio sessions would have a lot to do with it.

Cheers Spyda, you have made me a smiling, happy, hippylike, cynic, once again:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::wooh oo::woohoo::woohoo:

If you suffer from back shit I urge you to check these inversion tables out. They are amazing and work

Anyone keen for a swap?

As I have swapped my ADV bike for a road touring bike, I am still left with some ADV gear and no road gear, so was wandering if anyone would be interested in swapping their road Jacket and pants for my ADV jacket and pants.

I have DriRider Adventure series jacket (very warm with waterproof and winter insert) as well as pair of Neo ADV pants with winter inserts. Both warm and dry and in mint condition. I am looking for Jacket and pants set which will be suitable more for road / touring riding.

I am 6ft 2 and around 90kg. So if anyone out there is going the other way and wants to swap, then PM me.

Royal Enfield to Buy Ducati ?

Royal Enfield to Buy Ducati ?

Modern 250s vs 80/90's 250s

There are some similar threads already on this topic, but nothing at answers my question, so I've started this one.
I'm looking at buying a new 250 sport bike at the moment, but have only previously ridden trail/duel purpose bikes before so I'm new to sport bikes.

So anyway I've read quite a bit about the older 4 cylinder bikes 250s like the cbr250rr and gsxr250 and they sound like a lot of fun and have a bit of character to them.
Also they are getting quite old now, 20-30 years old and parts can be rare to source.

Then there are the newer 250s like the 1 cylinder cbr250 and ninja 250, which I've read are gutless things compared to the older bikes mentioned above and people seem to get tired of them quickly.
However they are obviously newer, more parts on hand and easier to find in good condition.

It would be good if i get some opinions on what a better buy would be. I'm already leaning towards an older bike, but would I be foolish to buy a more fun bike that could have/develop issues over
a newer less exciting bike?

We all know that Dads know everything - yeah right.

My Cbr250RK mc19 is not sparking on cylinder 2 and 3 when the engine is cold. Once the engine starts to warm up, starts running on all 4 cylinders but misfiring on 2 and 3 sometimes. ( I Know this, as I have put the ignition light onto the HT leads.
The ignition on cylinder 1 and 4 is 100%.

I have tested the HT leads, the ignition coil for cylinder 2 and 3, pulse generator, voltage going into the coils and checked for any broken wiring in ignition system.
Readings I got from the pulse generator didn't match the service manual at cold ( below spec ), but once it warms up it goes ( above spec ).
Also the ac voltage coming for once pick up sensor on the pulse generator is 1.3V and the other is 2.0v. ( other pick up sensor is 3.0V all the time )
I haven't tested the C.D.I unit as I don't know a accurate way of testing it.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to test next or is the problem the pulse generator?

Diavel suspension is too firm

I just traded a Ducati Monster for a Diavel and finding the suspension on the Diavel is really firm. I have made many tweaks as per the owner's manual and the best I have found is backing everything off (comp and reb) to their softest setting (front and rear) and then winding the rear preload right up to the maximum. I found this suggestion on another forum. This is the best I can get the bike to feel but it is still very harsh over every little bump on the road and motorway. It is cornering great on a smooth surface but imperfactions on back roads does cause it to "skip" on the corner. Basically it is not compliant and it feels like the high speed compression is non existent and it's like riding on a wooden plank with no suspension each time you hit any little (and I mean little) imperfection in the road. I weigh 83kg geared up so I am in the sweet spot of 80-90kg according to the manual.

Is this normal for this bike and has anyone else experienced this on the Diavel and found solutions around it... do I need to fork out for an Ohlins or does it sound like the shock is faulty? The bike has only done 300km but gut feel is this harshness may not improve with wearing in.

Learning All The Time - Common Courtesy

Afternoon,

It's a lovely afternoon here in the Capital (again), though it was a bit grey
and cloudy this morning. But since I'd gotten almost all my given chores
completed yesterday, I was allowed off the chain today to go riding for a
while.

I wasn't going to write anything this week since I was completely lost for
inspiration, but once I had gotten back home, a topic suddenly came to me:
Common Courtesy. Or maybe that should be "Uncommon Courtesy" ? Who
knows.

My two riding companions had only a morning available, so it was only going
to be a quick trip over the Rimutakas to the Wairarapa, a quick tootle around
the back blocks and then home again by midday.

I'm always Tail End Charlie on our rides, mostly because they are both on
larger machines and generally quicker than me. And they're pretty courteous,
in that they do wait for me at key intersections to make sure that I haven't
gotten myself temporarily misplaced. Otherwise known as 'lost'.

For me, a challenge on the Rimutakas is to try and go over and back and not
have to use the brakes unless really necessary (i.e. the right gear and speed
on all corners).

On the way up the Hutt side of the Rimutakas this morning, the other two
managed to get past two horse floats just before the bottom, while yours
truly decided to hang back and wait for another opening. Which is when
the boy racer caught up with me.

And he followed me up most of the hill, trying to find an opportunity on the
overtaking lanes to show me his shiny new tailpipes.

As we progressed, I can understand that he may have become captivated
by the lovely red colour of the VFR, but I would have appreciated it if he
hadn't tried to do so while sitting on the pillion. Well, it certainly felt that
damn close.

Anyway, near the top (the last passing lane), I slowed down just enough
so he could blast (?) past me and we were both happy. He, since he had
demonstrated his driving prowess, and me, happy that he was now in front
where I could keep an eye on him on the way down. I'm really courteous
like that.

And then he pulls off and stops in the carpark at the top of the Rimutakas.
What was all that about then ?

Oh well, onwards. No-one in front now and no-one in the mirrors, so I could
concentrate on the cornering without worrying about other following traffic.

Half way down the hill to Featherston, I looked in the mirrors to suddenly see
an Agusta sitting on my tail (he must have been moving), and who followed me
for a short distance (before deciding to overtake).

Which was fine, except that we had slightly different ideas as to where a safe
overtake might be performed. And I don't think immediately before a 25km/hour
hairpin bend was really quite the right spot.

As I started to go slightly wide and position for the left hander, he quickly
swooped out right around the outside of me, dived into the spot that I was
just moving into, and braked right in front of me.

Now, I'm an Agusta fan, but "nice Agusta" were not the words I said to myself
as I braked as well to avoid clipping his tail-end. Please, sir, some patience
and consideration for your fellow bikers.

Anyway, I got to Featherston, we re-grouped, and then headed out on a wee
tootle. And once the cobwebs had been suitably cleared, we then stopped in
Greytown for a coffee.

While we were sitting down outside the cafe having a coffee and a sausage roll
in the sun, some other people came and sat down at an adjoining table. One couple
had a dog with them, and of course, it took all of two seconds for the dog's radar
to tune and work out which of us still had a dog offering on our plate. And to sit
there looking longingly at me.

The lady owner said not to feed him (how did she even know that I was thinking
about it ?), and of course, I nodded. At which point I accidentally knocked the
last portion off my plate, and "Fluffy" (or whatever it was called) then pounced
and inhaled it before I could even react.

Which did lead to a slightly uncomfortable silence for a minute or so. Look, I
did apologise and say I was sorry. It was an accident. Honest. She should have
kept it on a tighter lead anyway.

It was time to leave anyway (we'd all finished our coffee), so we hopped back on
our machines and headed back towards the Hutt.

It was a lovely morning, and even when I caught up to an Audi Q7 pulling a trailer,
he moved over slightly to the left (on double yellows, no less) and waved me on
through. And it would have been rude not to accept his kind offer. I mean, this
just doesn't happen under normal circumstances.

And it was still feeling good back on the Rimutakas, when the gentleman in the
people mover (coming down on the Featherston side) decided to cross the yellow
line and use some of the tarmac on my side of the road (just as I was about to).
I happily moved over to accommodate him. How more considerate could you be !

But the interesting part of the trip occurred just as we got to the turn-off by the
Silverstream bridge.

There must have been a custom car meet happening somewhere nearby, as a
fleet of nicely presented cars started to stream through the intersection on the
cross signal.

Two motorcyclists within their group then parked up across the traffic (our lanes)
and then proceeded to vigorously wave their group through. Yes, we could all see
that they were simply trying to keep their group together, and that we might miss
one light change. That's fine. No issue.

Except that the gentleman at the head of our right hand lane begged to differ,
and then tried to drive his car around the motorcyclist parked across his lane,
even to the point of partially mounting the traffic island. Really ?

At which point, his brain must have engaged and he stopped. What was he going
to do anyway ? Try and drive through the cross stream of cars, even though we
had the green light and right of way ? I don't think so.

The custom cars kept flowing, and once they had finished, the motorcyclists waved
a cheery "Thanks" to the car drivers that had been inconvenienced and then headed
off to catch their group.

However, I was so busy focusing on this event in front of me that I hadn't noticed
the police car (with flashing red and blue lights) that had stealthed up just to the
left of me, and who then quickly turned and chased after the custom car group.
I suspect that a wee conversation might have occurred soon afterwards.

We had to wait maybe another 15 seconds before the lights turned green for us and
we were all on our way again. And we were home again by midday. A lovely morning
out.

My dearly beloved had some shopping to do, and also wanted a hand to drop off a
few items at the local recycling bins. So off with the riding gear, and into the car
(and yes, I did get dressed again in-between).

Now, for some reason, these recycling bins were also a popular destination today,
and parking space was limited. We turned in and then backed up to leave some
space for our fellow recycler (as you do), and there was about 1.5 car lengths
free space in front of us.

As we were about to depart, along came a lady who then proceeded to park
nose-to-nose with us and consume all the free space, to the extent that we
were now boxed in. Flashed the headlights, raised my hands in plain sight as to
say "what gives?", and indicate that we simply wanted to exit.

But No, she exited her car and mouthed something in our direction like "I'll only
be a minute". Yeh, right. And then proceeded to start unloading the back of her
car. Instead of simply backing her car up a half car length first. And so we waited,
and waited. She certainly had managed to get plenty of recycling into the back of
that car.

I have to admit that I did think about returning the favour when she was ready to
leave, but was reliably informed that would simply be confrontational, and not at all
courteous. "Yes, my love, you're right as always". And not worth getting upset about.

So, what did I learn today ? That common courtesy is maybe not so common after all,
and that it is sometimes displayed when you least expect it. Oh, and not to feed the
dog !

You're going to stick your finger where ... !?

Trip to the doctor on Friday resulted in my doctor knowing parts of me even better than Mrs Oakie knows them. Let's just say that a latex glove and lots of lube was involved. Oh ... and after the dreaded 'finger', what my doctor referred to as 'a telescope' was also used.

The news was positive but I just want to say guys that if a rectal digital exam is in your future, don't worry about it. It's not all that bad. (not fun ... not enjoyable ... but no worse than a recent dump).

And I'll neve forget the moment when my dear doctor with half a finger up my bum said ... "now just relax." Sure!

GN250 - have to push rear brake hard before brake light turns on

Hi all. New person here.

As the title says, my GN250's brake light works, but I have to push quite hard before it comes on.

I've done some poking around and have located the screw that needs to be twisted to tighten the spring to make the light more sensitive, but it's really, really difficult to access it. Does anyone have any tricks or know of a special tool used to turn that screw?

Thanks all

Anyone Transitioning? I mean using a transitions face shield

I wear glasses and last night I had to ride home (again) with a dark visor at night because I had to drink heavily after work (its the rule).

I do have a clear visor for the Shoei but then I have to wear sunglasses under it which isnt great - there's a pattern effect because of the polarisation.

There is a thing called a transitions faceshield which looks like the answer: clear at night and dark during the sunshine.

But I'd want some feedback before buying because its very expensive, and I had a pair of transitions lenses in a pair of glasses which didnt work that well (admittedly in the early days of the technology) - they were never really clear and never really dark - hence I have prescription sunglasses and ordinary glasses.

Your thoughts callers?

Not new here, just a new bike!

I've picked up a 2013 Repsol Fireblade in the last couple of months and I really love it. Coming from the CBR600 it feels very similar in terms of riding style so there was no need to learn to ride a "bigger bike"

I found myself riding around town in 1st gear a couple times just because it doesn't feel like you need to change gear. Quickly learned to pay attention to the built-in gear indicator! - That's a nice touch from the 600 trying to change up from 6th the odd time

The fuel gauge is nice, it's not your typical gauge instead it counts (in 100ml increments) how much fuel you've used. Once you get to 12.5l the counter will zero out and start counting up again - time to find a gas station, though with 5l remaining you could still get quite far.

I didn't mod the 600, aside from little accessories here and there. However with this new bike I've already put on a tail tidy (4hrs later but man does it look good) and a slip-on exhaust is en-route.

Suzuki gw250 or vl250 intruder

Hello, I am very new to biking world, and trying to decide between gw250 and intruder. The things that matter to me would be comfort, maintenance, torque, and highway (100 km Max).

I like the looks of both, but do understand they are a completly different types of bikes. Not sure which one is overall better in the above factors. Any advise - or perhaps advise on how should i decide. Thanks..

Cheers,

Tidy example of a Yz250 2004 model.
Regretful sale but need to fund the final stages of my supermotard project.

Been a brilliant bike, set up for trail rides and enduro. High compression and very quick bike. Always well maintained, cleaned and lubed after every ride.

Added a 13 ounce fly wheel weight to increase bottom end range and prevent stalling as easily.

Previous owner was a friend of mine who did a top end 11 hours before I got it. I have done 14hrs on it.
Total 25hrs on top end rebuild.
Hour meter says 98hrs.

Recently new:
Barkbusters
Front brake lever
Water pump seals
13 ounce fww
Vortix tires (rear due to be rotated)
Brake pads
Fork seals and oil (changed air height by 10mm to slightly soften the front for my weight)
Wheel bearings done 12hrs ago
Comes with spare plastics in photos.

Suspension set up for a 75kg rider.
Running 40:1 fuel ratio with 95oc.

Air-filter cleaned every second ride or any particularly dusty ride.
Oil changed every 8 hours.

Very sad to see her go, feel free to have a test ride, call anytime if you have questions :)
