Learning on a dirt bike
I've recently graduated to a restricted license and have an BMW F650 which I'm using to improve my riding skills and will become a regular ride. I'm also working towards full license by June 2018 and riding a bike around Europe in July 2018.
The BMW lives in another city and so I don't get to use it as much as I'd like.
I'm considering buying a 250cc dirt bike to hack around home (I live out in the country and not far from Kimmy's Motorcross Park) in order to get some more riding time, hoping to improve my confidence and skills.
My question, is riding a dirt bike off road likely to cause any bad habits that I will regret on the road ?

Waterview Tunnel Review
After years of eager anticipation today was the day us Aucklanders had dreamed off whilst sitting in traffic for hours and hours
each week.:drool:
Having read the thread on Go Pros I decided not to tape my Iphone onto my helmet as it would end up causing an accident.
After filling up at the new mini Z station in Onehunga, joined SH 20 and headed West. I spotted a bright yellow helmet in my
mirror gaining on me in the next lane and then gone....we almost cop had pulled up alongside me and then pulled away with a
cheerful wave.
He pulled into the same lane so I met his speed for a Police escort. Amusing to seecars er cagers passing then see
the cop in front of me and hit the brakes.
Passed what was previously the end of the motorway with a rising sense of anticipation then suddenly the tunnel appeared in
its 3 lane glory ready to whisk us as if by magic to Point Chev.
The brightly lit tunnel with its 80 KPH led signs and do not change lane signs, air circulation fans captivated the traffic as
passengers videoed this momentous occasion for the likes of Facebook or even Instagram.
Sadly it was all over too soon and we were delivered to the NW motorway where Westy driving was restored to normal
random lane changing and last minute 3 lane off ramp exits.
200 KMs of back road riding later returned to the tunnel for the return trip.
The off ramp swept around to the tunnel entrance where I stopped in the queue to the tunnel....WTF...Sunday afternoon and
queue.... 1st gear for half the way, got to read some of the writing on the wall... forget what it said but sort of conjured up
images of flooding and Bruce Willis movies.
The other end had queues as well and the first off ramp was chocca....probably people doing the return trip.
Thanks NZ for helping us Jaffas to have a better quality of life.:rolleyes:

Not Running the Bike
Hey, everybody. Recently purchased my first bike ('89 Honda VT250 Spada) and am gradually learning how to ride. But one thing is I'm taking it slow and getting private lessons on riding. The only really way to do this is rent their motorcycle as I have no way to get to their place safely. So I don't anticipate actually running my bike for a while. What do I have to do to keep it in good order while I get to a point in my rider knowledge that I can take it out the garage. Should I drain the tank? Best practices? Buy a tube and siphon the petrol out into a fuel can? Battery and chain I need to worry about? Should I put registration on hold until I can take it out on the road? Am slowly building up my toolset as well. Just purchased a basic socket set, etc. Been doing all my maintenance with a well broken in multitool prior to getting the bike. Very new to this and don't actually know anyone local to ask about these kinds of considerations. Thanks in advance!

Longtime Lurker Finally Bought a Bike and Registered!
Lived in New Zealand for the past two years and decided to finally learn how to ride. Lurked on here for months before finally picking up a 1989 Honda VT250 Spada to learn on recently. Have a LOT to learn and am doing it very slowly. Weekends and such for maintenance and basic skills. Looking for tips and advice for starters if you've got some. Thanks in advance!

KTM 390 Duke Reliability
Does anyone have experience with these? Looking at a second hand 2015 model and have read a whole lot online, was hoping to get some personal opinions/experience. This would be my second bike, coming from a VTR250. On my restricted until mid-next year so was wanting something a bit more fun to progress onto.
Tried it out today and felt good, albeit a bit loud (suspect that's just because it's a single cylinder). Punchy but easy to throw around corners; really nimble.
The bike has done less than 1500kms and the guy has had it since new (Dec 2015) but not done a service on it; what should I be expecting to fork out for that?
