Snowboarding trips!

Hey guys/gals,

I have a friend from Auckland who I regularly head to the mountain with for snow trips.

I'm wondering if there is anyone else around who is looking for people to head down to the mountain with.

With more people it becomes cheaper to split fuel/accommodation costs etc.

We usually head down saturday night, hit the mountain (usually Turoa) sunday and monday then head home.

2006 R6 Oil and filter change

Just completed an oil and filter change on the R6 lastnight as per the manual.

So 2.6l oil including filling new filter. Start it up lets it idle for a couple of mins, no warning light, stop check levels/leaks.

It sound okay at idle, but anything above that there is now a loud horrible noise coming from something in the motor.

What the hell has gone wrong? Any ideas?

I just can't turn down a free motorbike...

not sure if it is classic or just old.... 38 years old....:(

quite rare.. was never meany around ... everyone wanted a XL..
don't think there was much really wrong with them.. other than a bit
under power compaired to the other brands 250 4t bikes of the time...

So I now have a 1980 kawasaki Kl250 in the shed... all there apart from the road gear..
I really didn't need another bike... what could I do.. it was free...

It also came with a GSXR250 minus all the fairings and tank... gave that away...

A Revival Mission...

If it's good enough for Sidecar Bob to have to revive the odd RC30 or OW01 I thought I'd better start another project....

This is my EX500 Kawasaki based F3 bike. Usually ridden by Mark Taylor, it led Nationals, should have won at least one...Should have won Wanganui (arm pump...) But did win the support F3 class at the 1989 WSB round at Manfield. So it's got history...
It's been lurking in the back of the barn since 1999. Looking at it, if it had been left much longer the rats would have had it.
The modest aim is to get it to at least one CAMS meeting this coming season.

I knew it needed some things before pulling it out (Big Rob came round and we extracted it - thanks again Rob) It needed an ignitor - both the race ones died of old age and AFAIK Electronic R&D doesn't do digitals now. So a stocker is coming from Pete Sales.
Valve springs were always a problem - Tony's and mine broke aftermarket ones regularly. I'm going to see what kelford have. 20 years should have seen some progress.
I was given a good head and barrel a while back so I've at leat got a set of rings.

I'll document what i find as I go. If you read the US websites, they shouldn't be tuned, LOL. I'll show how we made the cranks last - even on the blown one with over 100 RWHP.

Hey folks

Just joined up as I’m pumped to be getting into riding. Did basic handling last weekend, and prepping for my theory test now.

Enjoying looking around for my first bike, and looking forward to riding around the Kumeu area soon. Will be a nice change from my desk job. I’m 41, so guess I’m a late starter.

Trail&Track riding venue North Wairarapa

http://trailntrack.co.nz/

Winter huh? Sod all rides on Silver-bullet. Hmm, what to do? Well I’d seen this place advertised. Seemed like a long way to drive from Wellington for a 15km track.
But desperation & all that. $30 a day or $50 for the weekend.
Heck can make a weekend of it.
Accommodation is like $30 for bunkrooms. And the host will cook a roast or whatever & breakfast all for not very much money.

Wasn’t expecting much, but got the other end of the scale. The hall is a converted woolshed with lots of wood slab tables etc. Fireplace. Can sleep up to 30, ok in bunks but there you go. The food however was fantastic and you could not grumble about the cost. She made maybe the best desert I’ve had. OK I’d had a few beers by then but it was right up there.

It gets blowy up there, real blowy, but the track is somehow out of it for the most part. Check on Castlepoint weather forecast which seems to be well different from say Masterton.

The Trails? Well mid winter it was quite muddy so if it was 15k it felt like a lot longer. OK it’s not the best ride I’ve been on but it is far removed from the worst & I’ll be going back for sure. Check site for dates it runs. Suspect the mud will dry enough from now to make it a real blast, I was a bit tired from paddling a fair bit.
In the summer it may be a little easy, but it’s a lot better than not riding & the weekend experience of it was the highlight.

where to buy exhaust bends

Hi guys.

I'm looking for a place to get some mild steel exhaust bends, 32mm OD. (to repair a butchered bike exhaust).

probably after say a 90 deg and a 180 deg, to chop up and re-model

car places seem to mostly do stainless steel, and steel & tube also only list SS.

anywhere in the waikato would be fine, as i'm happy to go for a trundle to pick things up

any ideas would be great if somebody has place they get bits from

cheers.

Aftermarket speedo

So I bought a cheap aftermarket speedo from e bay. Analogue not digital. When I wire it up, there is only a single negative wire that the high beam, neutral and indicators all go into. The issue I’m finding is that wiring them all up together causes issues, for example if I only touch the negative for the neutral light, the indicator and main beam only come on when bike is in neutral, similarly if I touch the negative for the indicators then the neutral is on permanently.

Any suggestions on how to start unwinding this little conundrum?

Cheers

Ride Forever course - Silver or Gold?

There's a few free course promotions at the moment, so thought I'd sign up for one. The main question I have is whether to do the Silver or Gold? I started riding again in 2010 but (foolishly) didn't do any training at the time. I'm now riding about 10,000 km a year.

Also, any recommendations on where to do the course? I live in central Auckland, so there's a good choice of locations I can get to fairly easily.

BMW R1200GS ABS Unit repair

Hi peeps,

does anyone know who can fix an ABS unit on a BMW R1200GS 2006? It is an ABS III or iABS or called integral ABS. I know of companies overseas, one in Germany so I know it can be done. I was wondering if there are any companies in this part of the world who could fix it. If you know anything could you please let me know?

Thanks

KLF300B No spark and electrical issues (quad)

Sorry to post another electrical problem thread but... i have recently acquired a klf300 with no spark and when I connect a power source the neutral doesn't come on and no power seems to get anywhere, i get 5ish volts to the coil an ignition switch when i spin the motor (by hand) but the battery voltage wont get to the coil or front of the wiring harness? wiring looks fine, could a bad starter relay or starter circuit relay cause this? Any ideas greatly appreciated

EDIT: I have also tested ignition and kill switches which seem to work

Honda GB 400 TT

A decent few years ago my son and I would visit a friend who had a gb 400 tt for his wife that never rode it, and my son would always go and play on it ( as kids do ) every time we went over. We would always joke that when my son turns 16 he can have the motorbike, but one thing led to another and we ended up taking the bike well before his 16th - We got the bike running ( Never had license plates for it ) and was left sitting in storage. Long story short, I ended up moving to Australia and had to leave my possessions with a good friend living in Kumeu in auckland - a few years go by and we lost contact after he had moved house. I came back to New Zealand for my friends funeral ( the one that gave us the GB ) to find out unfortunately the friend had boxed up - and put on the street (I don't blame him, few years no contact and whatnot) I was just wondering if there's a slim chance anyone on this forum had come across a GB 400 tt in parts around kumeu - it was a MkII with the cowl and everything.

Any help would be appreciated, although I do understand how impossible this task is - I would still like to try hunt it down.

Thank you

Caylab

New Zealand GPX Route Editing Software

Over the 10+ year period I have been building GPX adventure routes with software, I've used a number of different route editing packages. There are pros and cons with all of them. The two main attributes of route editing software that impact user experience are 1) the software tools to create and edit routes and 2) the user-friendliness of the mapset; especially throughout the different zoom levels.

Below are a some screen captures of different New Zealand route editing software options. You can read full details of each one here: New Zealand Route Editing Software

New Biker Needs Help

Hi everyone, my first post on Kiwi Biker, glad to be here. I'm having hard time deciding what to buy for my first bike ever to commute and weekend fun, of course it has to be LAMS approved still nothing too high somewhere 150 to 300cc near $5k. As I only ridden 100cc bikes years ago and don't want something I can't handle so please help me out, here my options

1. Yamaha 150cc 2014 19k kms price $2.5k -- I think of going real cheap with this and get myself comfortable riding then change in year or so
2. Hyosung 250cc 2012-13 2k-5k kms price near $4k -- I like this because not many kms, killer look :bleh: and price is ok,Youtube reviews say its a cake mixer still ok for 1st bike
3. Ksaki Ninja 250cc 2009-14 10k-30k kms price near $5k -- of course who doesn't like Ninja thou I'm hesitant with many kms on these and most have scratch
4. Honda CBR250cc 2008-2015 10-30k kms price near $5k -- CBR fails to excite me with looks, nice reviews however
5. Ksaki Ninja 300A 2015 18k kms price near $6k -- very flash  I really want it but still not sure for first bike

So I hope I made some sense here also what do you prefer other then these bikes and which of these you would buy for first bike if you have very mild experience riding in past.
Thanks for reading

CB250 Fueling issue??

I will outline the symptoms.
1962 CB 250 twin carb

Bike will only run on one cylinder for about half a kilometre then cough sputter and run fantastic from then on. if you turn the motor off and restart it purrs like a kitten. If you leave the bike sit for a couple of hours the same thing will happen with it running on one cylinder for around half a kilometre.

Always the LH cylinder. Has new spark plugs and carbs have been cleaned with new o rings in the flange connections.

Any ideas are appreciated!

Parts & Accessories Honda rvf400 nc45 / mc28 17” rear wheel

Haven’t quite decided if I want to sell this yet before my latest project is finished, but putting it up here - someone make me an offer.

Up for sale is my 17” rear wheel from a rvf400 nc35/ or mc28. White, paint has a couple small chips but can’t see any dents or curbing. Bought for my nc30 a few years ago that I’m looking to sell at some point soon when I get round to cleaning and servicing it. Fits the vfr400 nc30 and is a common upgrade to massively increase the tyre choice for these.

Please check what these go for first and make me an offer

Drum Brake Arcing

My 53 Thunderbird has a very poor 7" SLS front brake.
Its hard to look like Marlon Brando when you can't stop.....:innocent:
Research has led me to getting some self aligning shoes to replace the pivot type.
I was down at the local brake shop and there was a Speed Twin wheel identical waiting for 'Brake Arcing"
I think if it improved the brake its probably worth a punt.
Do they use a machine?

Getting gear dry?

I've got Goretex riding gear, but, on days like Sunday (absolutely torrential rain - they ended up closing the Waikato Expressway at Mercer due to flooding), it still gets wet through [eta: not through the seams - mostly at the edges ie cuffs, then if the liner gets wet it wicks water through] . Simply too much moisture. I have a 2 hour drive every weekend, so I can't pick my riding time to suit the weather.

What's the best way to get the gear dry, pronto?

I've tried spinning in the washing machine to fling excess out, but doesn't seem to work with the goretex like it used to with my ex's dririder (though maybe that says something about water repelling capability...)

I live in an apartment so I'm limited to indoor drying areas only (ie, the bathroom) on days where the rain is coming sideways. On fine days, I have a balcony, but on those days my gear doesn't get soaked. On Sunday I hung the jacket and pants to drip over a towel, and removed the liners to dry in the dryer, figured at least the inside layer would be dry in the morning...

Getting gear dry?

Its 2018 and I subscribed to a paper magazine today!

I know, right?

But I love paper magazines. I love getting them in the mail and then having a nice read on the khazi in the morning. Or the evening. I love the tactility of it and the frisson of excitement.

I am thinking about re-subscribing to CYCLE WORLD again. Though their subscription department are such dicks. All they had to do was have an automatic debit on my credit card like Netflix. But no - make it difficult and painful and timeconsuming and slow. So after 30 years they can get fucked.

But yeah - I subbed to Classic Racer mag. And I get Performance Bikes too. and I think Built though I havent seen one for a while.

Ignitech ignition touring reliability? Anyone out there done this?

Hi All

I'm weighing up whether or not to fit an Ignitech Hall Effect ignition unit to the Ducati 900 Supersport.

I've already got the kit and it's blingtastic, with all the goodies. There's no doubt in my mind that this is the go-to accessory for a track bike, but I'm having reservations about long-way-from-home reliability.

Most of my riding is long distance back country touring. I don't ride in all weathers but getting caught in rain or the occasional mucky gravel road is a reality. Being several days from home is also something that happens. Top end performance and smooth running's good but the stock ignition, for all its clunkiness, has shown that it can handle flat batteries, failed regulators, general abuse etc etc.

I'd imagine there are a few Ignitech's out there by now... how's it working out, if you own one?

Solenoid issues

Hi team,

I have a 95 DR650.

Its blown about 4 starter solenoids now.

I had it into Coleman’s but they said they thought it was dodgy connections and an aftermarket solenoid. They replaced the connections and attached a Suzuki branded solenoid which was supposed to be higher rated than the job required.

The starter solenoid has now blown the 4th unit.

I therefore have the following questions:

1) Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? (Thanks for the help in the other thread)
2) Is there any reason why I shouldn’t keep jumping the poles of the solenoid to start the bike? Pretty over paying out when the issue probably won’t get found anyway.
Cheers,

Traffic lights.

So, I got a motorbike after not having one for like 5 years (last one got stolen) 2 weeks ago. I had forgotten how much I love riding, should have got another one with the insurance money instead of a bicycle. ><
Anyway. I was riding to the gym last week around 9pm and I was reminded about something that drove me absolutely nuts when I lived down in Wellington; traffic lights that don't change to green. It happened all the god damn time in Wellington and now non-main ones do it here in Hamilton too. I've got the one that turns into the gym sorted, if I sit a little bit back and to the left of the lane it works fine. But all the other ones that don't work... sitting there for like 10minutes in the rain until a car finally pulls up. At least Wellington CBD was somewhat busy at night, Hamilton roads after 9 are dead.

How do you guys deal with this? is there some obvious trick or something I'm missing here? Do I just tape a bunch of broom handles together to poke the pedestrian crossing button?

Oh, and also, as a side note, why is it so hard to find fairings for a cafe racer? Do I need to get it custom built?

FXR150 lights flickering off

My fxr150 has a problem with the lights flickering off when I give it revs. When it idles its fine. Holding down push to pass highbeam works fine when riding but not with just normal light switch on highbeam. All lights flicker off inc dash, but brakes light comes on when using the brakes and indicator works fine.

Battery is 12.6 off and 14.4 when running. Can hear the relay clicking when the lights flicker off.

Gpz900r

Hey folks. I've been off the forum for quite a few years as I haven't owned a bike for well, quite a few years. Mainly because of lack of time to ride and having small children that rely on me to be in one piece and able to pay the bills. Recently I've been thinking about a project bike - something to chip away at in the garage with a view to being road-worthy in a few years when the kids are old enough to fend for themselves. I was thinking about a cafe racer but suitable doner bikes on TradeMe aren't exactly free (Suzuki XV 750 'project bike' @ $1400).

So, I was thinking, if I'm going to spend a couple of K up front on the purchase of the project bike, my ideal would be an '80s GPZ900R à la Top Gun. I haven't seen one come up on TrandeMe and I'm suspecting that in NZ they won't come up that often and when they do, a project bike would probably go for around $4k+. If that's the case I'll look at bringing one in from Australia and save myself a couple of K (Yes I know I'll need to consider shipping, import duties and compliance). So I was wondering if you guys had ever seen one come up on TradeMe in the last couple of years and if so, what did it go for? Thanks for your input.

Bikes 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Custom

For sale is my beautiful 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 900.
It's a great price for this bike, and include the pack rack and Ventura Bag ($650 value)

She runs excellent, and a beauty to ride, doesn't miss a beat, and great with a pillion also.

I would love to keep this bike, but unfortunately finances means I can't, as I have recently married, and have a baby on the way.
So it will be sad to see her go, but would need to tidy up some finances especially with family taking a priority at the moment.

Has just been serviced, Oil change etc,
Also has a brand new WOF. Exp - 20/12/2018
Rego has been on hold, as it's been sitting mostly kept in the garage.

a great bike, and a great ride once anyone sits on her they will be hooked,

Gear shift linkage question

Howdy, I'm relatively new to riding and I've just had a nice ride from Wellington to Christchurch on my Honda CB400sf and the gear shift linkage dropped out a couple of times. There is now a new clunky kind of sound in the lower gears. I'm going to get a new linkage that hasn't had its thread stripped, but I can't see how that would make a difference to this new sound. Any ideas on what could have cause this?

Cheers

Front brake issues

Does anyone have any idea why my bandit 250’s front brake feels rock solid when I’ve bleed it off the bike with pad spaces fitted and then goes soft when fitted back on the disc?

It’s as though the lever travel increases once the caliper is on the disc. I’ve tried bleeding it on the disc and it makes no difference either. When I bleed it off the disc and it’s firm I have the pads spaced the same width they’d be when sitting on the disc.

Any ideas what to try next?

Ax100 won't rev over 4000rpm problem

My Suzuki ax100 was running perfectly when got it then I replaced the fuel lines and it ran like shit and it wouldn't go over 3500-4000 rpm under load but in neutral it revs fine so I bought a new fuel line and new spark plug and sanded the coil connections and cleaned the carb and a whole heap of stuff and it still runs like shit, any suggestions that might help

DR250S Won't run or start when warm

So i have an old run of the mill DR and it would start then run for a bit (half way round the block) and then die, so i replaced the coil and it still does the same thing! Could it be a stator or cdi issue? its wired pretty sketchily but runs when cold. I have also noticed that if i turn the bike off once its been running in the garage a bit it will not start again.

Cheers, Marlin

Canterbury: Kickstart 2018 - Christchurch

This year the Christchurch motorcycle event Kickstart is moving.

It's being rebranded to Kickstart Trackside, as it's being held at Ruapuna on Saturday the 22nd of September. This is the first year at Ruapuna, and that opens up a few possibilities.

There will be more retailers there, and you can buy stuff there this year. More food available.

Demonstrations will include an overtaking demonstration, a braking demonstration, and cornering exercises.

Riders who register will be able to take part in a class called The Art of Cornering, being a 15 minute track session with an instructor. Details are still being worked out. Registration is likely to be via a new Facebook page, or on the day if there are still places left.

The usual stuff will be there. We are still working out details, but it looks like being an improvement on the work we have done at the A&P Showgrounds in recent years. We started at the Speights Ale House on Bealey Ave some years ago with the Biker Breakfast, and it's grown into what we have this year.

I'll pop up some links as time goes by.

Control motor for MotoGP.

Could somebody please tell me what the control motors are for the three current MotoGP classes. I know Moto2 will be moving to the Triumph 765 triple next season, but don't know what the current controls, or the new season's MotoGP and Moto3 are. I believe chassis design is up to the indivual team, but stand to be corrected.

New member & new to motorcycles

Hi All,

I'm new to motorcycles and just got my first bike a 2017 Yamaha MT-07 LA on Saturday the 30th of June. I've had the bike now for 1 weekend and I've ridden it 3 times in that time. It's a hair raising experience being a new rider taking my street bike down a 2 km gravel road with steep hills, sharp bends and negative camber then onto a 100 km/h road but I haven't been wiped out yet and I haven't dropped the bike yet either :sweatdrop!

Sorry if you've waved at me and I haven't waved back, I was probably in deep concentration trying not to die :shit:

I'm looking forward to some nice weather as I have summer gloves and Kevlar jeans so I can practice and become more relaxed and comfortable while I ride.

Funeral insurance

Worth it? Not?

For the level of cover I'm looking at at age 58, if I make it to age 73 any further premiums paid after that stay with the insurer. They are betting that I will live past 73. Getting Funeral insurance means I'm betting I won't live that long. I am in good health and have been tested for the usual things. My male ancestors generally lived into their 80s and 90s.

A resource. https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/808...sumer-NZ-warns

What I'm looking at doing is putting the equivalent of the premium payments into an account of my own with the kids name on it and managing it that way.

Discuss.

The Palace Wolves (never heard of them before) "Lights that fade". The interesting thing is all the video footage is from the late 60s to mid 1970s. I saw Sheene, Read, Nieto, Pasolini, a rider on a Jamathi, I think Ago on a 500 Yamaha, etc.

cheers,
