Hi chaps thanks for letting me join. I am looking for any one who may be able to assist me with contacts for spare parts for a Yamaha YL 3 1968 not a YL 1 which is very similar. I beleive they were quite popular down your end of the world. Thanks very much in advance for any help.

demerits is it worth it?

went to New plymouth on Friday last got a ticket for speeding
dam it. now this is my story.
doing 105 ish down a big steep hill just before the awakino gorge some place starting with M but anyway this hill three lanes down hill anyway saw the 50klms temp for road works but rounded a gentle right and pinged at 81 klms not more than 100m in the zone. $300 plus 40 merit points.
I was real nice to the man but he hit me anyway.
so I recon I was real hard done by this time but is it worth writing to the police and point out the sillyness of it all?
Has anyone here ever got a let off for writing in to the police? if so how did you do it? were you greasing or firm whats the secret?
of shall I just pay up and move on? is a court hearing expensive and how much? If there are any traffic Police listening
F**K UP frankly

this good weather?

Hey...

The past couple of days have been pretty darn good weather, I've been out for a brief ride after work each day. Whats the bet, it's going to piss down on Sat AND Sun :disapint:

It's quite a way from Wgtn to the Rimutakas, just a bit too far for an after work ride! I've had to get my fix of "corners" around oriental bay, and the roundabouts at the entrance to Miramar LOL

Anyone planning on a ride this Sat/Sun, weather permitting?

Increased Highway Patrol presence...

So in the past few days I've noted an increased presence of Highway Patrol units out and about. Earlier than normal, later than normal, further away from the regular hangouts than normal and just more of them. No shortage of customers being pulled over too. Anyone know whether this is a blitz of sorts, a new intake of recruits ready for release, or an effort at more road policing? I'm not bothered by it at all, but it has been very noticeable :devil2::niceone:

Black stains inside carb. Really old GL1000.

So with southerly squalls whistling round the shed I decided to leave the helmet on the shelf and give the old GL some love with some well deserved maintenence...

This is what I found when I removed the carbs:

20180527_154749.jpg20180527_154935.jpg20180527_160856.jpg

There is blackness on the inside of the inlet manifold and coming all the way back up to the carb and marking the vacuum piston and carb body.
The blackness isn't heavily oiled and only some is removed with petrol or carb cleaner. More of a stain.

This has been happening for a while and I have noticed it getting slowly worse over the years on all cylinders but far worse on number 1, which always runs a little advanced.

So what do we reckon? Valve guides? Timing? Old age? Signs of impending doom or just a well used motor?

Winter touring- dumb idea but we tried

Just back home from three days riding the Lower North island with four other Optimists (read= idiots). So a month ago when summer just wouldn't let go this idea of a 3 or 4 days ride seemed feasible. Two weeks ago I drove back from Hamilton and it was blue skies all the way, 20 bloody degrees still by Hunterville at 4pm! Fudge I said to the Missus, this ride soon might be a clever idea. Nope.

Friday 25/05/18. Wgtn to Napier. Wet then cold. Cold then wetter. Wetter and colder at the same time. Pretty much that inter-changing mix described the whole ride up. So our aim to push to Gissy Friday was dumped as we enjoyed the warm fire at the Gin Trap. Next day Gissy was forecast rain, rain and more rain, so reluctantly we went to Taupo. We didn't want to go up on the plateau at any time knowing how cold it is in winter. Forecast didn't show any rain along Gentle Annie or Taupo - wrong it was. 3 degrees was registered at one point over the Napier-Taihape Road. Last time I rode this I had a blast, laying black lines out of ever bend. This time all my rear tyre was doing was showering a water spray up my back. Waiouru to Taupo was freezing but actually pleasantly dry half of the time - look at that lovely snow on the mountain radiating warmth.

This morning we woke to more of Friday's joys of wet & freezing cold. We pulled the pin and rode home in a balmy 6 degrees along the Desert Road. Fortunately the heavens dropped torrential rain on us at times to take our minds off the chill.

Actually the others suffered the cold but I have to say being now fully kitted out in 1tonne gear was an eye opener compared to my buddies frozen hands at each stop and their misery. I was never miserable from the cold and stayed dry. The Storm gloves did need inner thermal liners for the coldest sections but double gloved like that I couldn't believe I never got sore finger tips etc. My new 1tonne Blitz boots excelled at keeping me comfy, dry and warm. Again, other gear has eventually given out to numb toes and wet socks. The 1tonne Duel jacket and textile pants did an outstanding job. Never a cold moment the whole trip for the body. Completely dry inside after three days of decent rain.

There were a few more bikes on the plateau this crap weekend than I expected to see. Reassuring to know you are not the only idiots about.

Bring on summer.

Gs750

Hey guys,

My current ride is a aprilia rsvr but I'm working on a new toy so i thought I might share my project it's a 1977 gs750 motor in a 1981 gsx 750 frame I was given a rolling chassis and a motor and a whole heap of stuff in boxes. I've been sitting on this for awhile because I couldnt decide what to do with it or if it was actually worth putting time into but I aquired a turbo ..... that sparked some ideas so I hope to have a cheap rego bike that I can ride year round with a turbo!

The motor is a total unknown it came from a TQ midget, all this is fabrication is a first for me so feel free to critique and share a better way to do anything.

I'm chewing over ideas how to feed the turbo I'm thinking a seperate system fed by a scavenge pump, the motors oil pressure is far to low to feed a turbo because it's a roller bearing crank, well this is what I'm told anyway, I've managed to take the exhaust housing off the turbo so I can index it, what a pain in the ass that was.

Anyways I'm fabing up an exhaust to feed the turbo at the moment, I just bent the headers because they where mangled now I'm just starting to make a 4 into one collector.

Yamaha Nmax 155

I see the 155 version of the Yamaha Nmax has finally made it to NZ with a VERY competitive price of $4499 + ORC. Compare that with $5500 for the Honda PCX 150 or the Piaggio Medley 150. With ABS and a liquid cooled, fuel injected 4 valve engine plus variable valve timing, it looks like it is far and away the class leader when it comes to value for money.

On SH23 this arvo...

Who was the guy on the HD wearing a pinky-red safety vest leading bunch of six or seven L plate riders out of Hamilton on SH23 this arvo?
You went from Dinsdale down SH23 and turned right into SH39 at Whatawhata.

What were you thinking?
The bikes were spread out line astern over a hundred yards and my following speed got down to 60km/h at one stage.
The speed limit was mostly 100km/h and I had cars bunching up behind me (I was in a car) and looking very impatient.
I wasn't in a hurry, which was lucky as a safe pass wasn't an option, but seriously Dude, you need to think about what you were doing.
You dress for safety, but you don't ride for safety...

I have no doubt that this will attract all sorts of responses, but I'm posting on the off chance that this guy is here:think about it, man - you are putting those squids were in danger and you were seriously pissing off the driving public.

Are there any worth joining? I'm not in a position to go up north all the time now (I currently belong to the Whangarei club; 2 1/2 - 3 hours away) so am looking at closer stuff.
I'm a grouchy old bastard now, so it's gotta be pretty laid back and not full of b/s. Or is the north it?

Boots on a budget. Help please!

Hi guys,

I am a returning KB member and have been slowly getting my biking gear back together since recently getting a new bike and riding more. The last thing I need is a pair of boots. I am on a bit of a budget as I am the sole earner in my house with my wife at home looking after our 13 month old boy.

I have been all over trademe looking for a pair of second hand boots to get me going with little success. People don't want to cheaply part with their old boots for some reason.

The second option is to buy cheap new pair of boots such as the Exustar variety or Cnell etc that can be seen on trademe for $99 to $169 respectively.

Does anyone have any experience with the Exustar boots? They "look" ok (better than the more expensive Cnell boots) in photos etc but I cannot find any reviews on them.

https://www.motobeast.co.nz/products...segt-greyblack

Or should I just save up the $300+ needed to get a pair of brand name boots?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Get off your bloody phone

I know most of us have had run ins or close calls with assholes on their phones while they drive.

well SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) Are doing 'Phone Free 48', a fundraiser to raise awareness of the dangers of texting while driving,

Basically, encouraging people to go 48 hours without their phones (think 48 hour famine, but without your favourite device)

All money raised will go towards the SADD charity continuing to deliver road safety programs to teens in schools. You can encourage your kids / friends to take part, or you can sponsor some of the people doing it.

ACC - Born Again Riders Cassina Free

OK ACC have increased registration to a super ridiculous amount

Couple of points I recently have had on my mind

We now (me and wifey) pretty much register our bikes for 6 months of the year - Oct to March.

Going back on the bike in October are we Born again Riders because I sure as hell know for a month or so it takes some time to get that "feel" of the road.

Is 3-6 months off the bike enough to lose the touch??

Thanks for the comments posted on the previous thread derailed by "I am Cassina listen to me I am full of shit"

Is this counterproductive to ACC registration amount collected and Born again riders on the road?

Whats your thoughts?

So in effect (2 fold) ACC are getting less money from registration and putting people on the road that haven't ridden for some time.

Is this Smart? Of course it isn't

Whats your thoughts?

Is there any way of making them know their stupidy? If you actually agree with the above scenario I have pointed out?

what oil on cam reassembly?.

doing the valve clearances on the klx and the manual says to put molybdenium disulphide oil on the shafts on reassembly and the same oil on the bolts before torqueing them down.
I have some grease with moly disulphide which I think is right but what do people use on there shafts and bolts as I cant find anything like moly oil.

Can I just use the oil in the engine or is that not enough lube on start up.

Cheers .

Issue with motorway onramp transit lanes - 2018

Hi all, long time occasional lurker, first time poster. I apologise if my searching hasn't been up to scratch. I found This thread from back in 2009, but I'm having issues with the police and NZTA about motorway onramp transit lanes.

I was pulled over in April for using the T2 lane on the SH16 (northwestern motorway) Great North Road citybound onramp. The initial stated cause of the traffic stop was for not having the required number of passengers. When I received the written warning I raised it with police. This initial cause was then scrubbed but changed to the fact that motorcycles are not allowed to use the lane due to not being on the sign.

I have involved the NZTA, and an investigation has supposedly been raised, but with no resolution after almost two months it's starting to seem like it's ground to a halt, and I'm still sitting here with a black mark on my licence.

I'm not about to stop fighting this, as this issue seems to have occurred and been resolved before. As motorcyclists we have a strong vested interest in ensuring the road rules are enforced properly for our safety. I don't want any other motorcyclist to be ticketed for using lanes they seem to be fully entitled to.

After two months there are a lot of details to my story but unless they are relevant I'll leave them out in the interest of brevity. There have also been some interesting comments from the police, such as their belief that "most motorcyclists do not use the transit lanes, which would indicate to them that most seem to know the rules".

I would very much appreciate if it anyone would have any resources that would assist me in trying to convince the police that motorcyclists are permitted to use the transit lanes, or convince the NZTA to conclude their investigation and respond to the police. Otherwise if anyone has any contacts in either organisation that would be interested in assisting in my case I would love to get in touch with them. I understand the difficulty of this however, as I do not want to put anyone in a compromising position of having to argue with their colleagues.

Nga mihi.

Transalper where are you?

I can't seem to send direct messages from my phone. Trying to contact the ChCh crowd, especially Transalper.

Can anyone WhatsApp me about bike hire for a visiting pom in October 2018? +353871713125. I live in Ireland these days. If anyone is in the area, come and stay!

Transalper where are you?

UK biker on tour in October 2018

Hey people, it's been ten years since I visited and participated in the meetings and ride-out events around ChCh with Transalper and Oldrider (iirc) plus a load of guys on the adventure ride turned trail where Transalper ended up sinking sideways in a strong current. But, I remember it all fondly and vividly and I often talk about it still. New Zealand transformed my life in many ways.

I have inspired a friend and his wife to go to NZ and sample the roads and the two wheeled brotherhood (and sisterhood) of your amazing country.

I recommended him to sign up here. His name is Rob. Lookout for his StoneAlive screen name.

I'm after some latest info for him on how to spend two months riding the south island please. Are there any affordable bike hire places these days?

Is Trade Me still the best way to find a private seller?

Are any of you into selling and buying back (pre agreed rates, to make you a modest profit)?

Are any of you selling a decent used machine suitable for the back roads, two-up?

I think he's going to your the north island in a camper, and then do the south on a bike.

That's it. Any info gratefully received.

I live in Ireland now, on the West Coast, Galway. If any of you are ever in the area, come and stay!

2007 hyosung v2s 250r won't start

I was having problems keeping my bike running after i shifted into first gear, so i was told to clean the spark plugs. After removing the fuel tank, cleaning the spark plugs and puting it all back together my bike only started and ran for about 30 seconds then died and i can't get it to start now.

Any ideas?

Hacking a WR250 Speedo

The speedo on my WR250R is flipping useless, even from new it drove me mental that the stupid thing couldn’t get close to approximating my real ground speed. I spend a lot of my riding time trying to perform the mental gymnastics required to work out if I actually am doing 40 through a school zone. Then after a multi-day effort to undo the nut on the output shaft, I’ve changed the sprocket, dropping a tooth on the front. So the speedo’s miles out now.

So this weekend, armed with an oscilloscope, I set out to see if I could hack into the WR’s wiring loom and trick the bikes speedo. The ultimate goal of this project is to come up with some sort of speedo healer type device.

There’s lots of stuff on the internet about WR250R speedos, so finding a good place to hack into the loom was not a problem. The speedo pickup connects just behind the left-hand side panel, easy.

3939334812_572ff3c3be_b.jpg

Putting the bike on a lift stand allowed me to easily spin the back wheel (speed pickup sender reads off the gear box) and see what kind of electrical pulses come out of the sender.

The scope showed a nice 5 volt square wave. Awesome, I can knock up a simple microcontroller circuit to bang out a 5 volt pulse. The Yamahas excellent onboard diagnostics mode allowed me to count the number of speed pulses per wheel revolution to give me an idea of how fast to send the pulses to the ECU.

For any programmers out there, the guts of program is pretty frickin simple.

While(1)
{
pulse == !pulse;
delayMs(10);
}

That’s it, wire the circuit up to the bikes battery and the microcontroller output to the ECU speedo input. Turn on the ignition and SUCCESS.

DSC_0068.jpg

Playing around length of the delay shows different speeds on the clocks. At this point the urge to see how fast she could go became overwhelming, so I set the delay to zero to see what would happen.

DSC_0071.jpg

Look mum I’ve maxed out the bike, no hands!

Next weekends job is to read the pulses from the speedo sender work out how fast they’re coming, adjust them according to some ratio and send them onto the ECU. Which I think is going to be a bit trickier
