Duke 390 Oil pressure issues

Hi guys

Last May I bought myself the new model KTM Duke 390, I love the bike but I've had a lot of troubles with it.
Over heating, radiator cracking, TFT dash needed replacing and recently I've had to replace the oil pump.
Recently I've been having more issues with the oil pump and it's now giving me the same error I had with the old one, Oil pressure low.

It was fine for the first 500kms but now it comes on after about 200m of riding. One thing I've noticed is that it doesn't come on when the bike is at idle OR I'm giving it the beans. Say 8000+ RPM
The bike shop I bought it from is closed for the long weekend so I can't take it in and I'd really like to know if anyone has some experience with this. I'm wondering if it's a potential air lock somewhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I really love my bike but all of these issues are getting quite tiresome, I don't know of anyone else who's had so many issues with their '17 390

Bikes Husqvarna 701 Supermoto

I've decided to sell my 701 SM. I've only owned the bike since December - I sold my Speed Triple to get into something completely different, but now regret my decision and I want to get back onto a supernaked. The bike has been incredible fun, but just doesn't quite suit me long term.

Bike has an arrow pipe and crash protection/case savers. Factory warranty until January 2019.

The bike has been totally faultless, pulls incredibly hard and is a shit load of fun. I've changed to a 15t front sprocket which I strongly recommend, though it also comes with the original 16t as well.

Brand new Michelin Power RS tyres ($600).

KM's will change as I'll still be riding it.

I'm in Tauranga, get me on 021 800 216.

Waterproof commuting

Looking for advice. I commute daily 20 min each direction in Auckland. I have 2 piece leathers and I've been using waterproof over jacket and pants in wet weather. The pants were great initially but they leak like a sieve now - wet crotch etc. It's also a pain having to carry this gear just in case of rain (no storage capacity on my Thruxton R) I'm thinking of investing in some waterproof textiles for this winter. Any recommendations?

I have waterproof liners in my leathers but they are a waste of time and still let water in - Rev'it gear.

I'm leaning towards goretex textile (i.e. they outer shell is waterproof) but they are hellish expensive - something like Rev'it poseidon GTX or Kim Badlands. I'm prepared to pay the money to stay dry but only if it's a guaranteed solution.

I'd welcome some advice.

Farm bike to dirt/trails bike?

So I picked up a cheap as ag100.
Have got it running as best as it can be I guess in its stock form. I've taken all the carrier stuff off of it, to help lighten it a bit. Freed up the airbox, cleaned out the carb and fuel tank. Fresh gas etc. Sorted clutch cable and tightened everything up.

I've now just come to realize how slow and basically useless it is on the trails we have.
I'm not wanting better speed or power but was thinking since I know now how limited it is could I make it at least look and ride better?

I'm thinking strip it to the bones and just add different bike parts?

Or does anyone have any easy diy tips to get some more go out of this pig?

Can't sell it and buy another bike.
A. I live in Blenheim so there is no other bikes.
B. Don't have the funds right now.

Though there is a cr85 for 1k I could possibly get if I sold this. But its a small wheel? I'm only 5' something so might still be to big?

USA Trip

I'm heading to the US in June for 3 months to ride. First trip to the States. I have purchased a bike privately in Connecticut. Can anyone who has done this in the past recommend an Insurance Company and also the process to get the bike transferred into my name. Anything else to be wary of in this process.

Looking for garage/workshop space for bike restoration Wellington

I am in the middle of restoring 2 MZ ETZ 250's in different levels of disrepair, but I live in an Apartment in the city which is not conducive to doing restoration work as I can't just take everything apart and leave it sitting in the garage. so I am looking for somewhere I can store and work on the bikes ideally in the General Wellington City area. Does anyone have and leads? I don't mind sharing space if anyone wants to join in renting a place or would like to share their space...

Cheers

Andrew.

Simplest way to store the motorbike

Folks,

I looked online on how to store the motorbike for a few months. It seems to be longer and harder process than building the entire bike from scratch. :brick:

When I am back, the bike will be taken for service, so I don't need to change oil or any of that, and I can't put the tires off the ground.

What would be a simple and easy way to store the bike for 6 months in a garage-like premise?

Black fuel?

So I picked up a cheap Yamaha 2 stroke 100cc. Was told oil pump was not working so it came with a full tank of premixed gas. Took it out today for a ride on the track and it cut out on me, wouldn't idle and filter was dirty as heck. So I pulled carby off and noticed a lot of oil, cleaned carby up and drained the tank. I immediately noticed how black the fuel was. Like it looked like oil with a tiny bit of gas in it.

I pulled tank off and have washed it all out, was a whole lot of crap inside. Like twigs and crap.

So what would the best thing be to do next? I'll be filling it up with fresh gas. And checking oil pump myself.

Hard cold starting XT225, low compression?

Our XT225 is a pig to start cold. Now I just pull the plug and pour a little fuel in and away she goes. Plug is dry when I pull it out.

Hit the starter and off she goes. Starts fine hot. Runs well.

Im thinking low compression, carbs was torn down and cleaned out when we got it. I dont have a comp tester and dont feel like buying one.

What say you?

Is this a 120?

I thought most jets had their "full" size stamped on it, eg 170 has 170 stamped on it, 35 has 35 and so on. This jet has 12 then a funny little logo, would this mean it is a 120 ? And if so would that be metric or imperial ? I assume 120 is 1.2mm but who knows

Thanks

(not my pic)

Hey guys, recently got these boots, and seeing as it was the first proper rain i've ridden in today (a whopping 20 min commute) I thought i'd drop a quick review.

Pros:
Comfortable enough.

Cons:
Are not waterproof.
Water leaks in the stitching between sole and boot itself.

1 out of 5 stars.

suzuki sv1000s tapping/cam troubleshooting

I have a Suzuki SV1000s K3 and I'm just looking for opinions or experience with an issue.

there is a tapping sound coming from either the crank or front cylinder.
it's fairly quiet compared to the engine so it's hard to tell exactly where.
it's about as fast as tappets but not as regular.
I can only hear it, I can't feel a physical tap, and can't pinpoint exactly even listening to a piece of wood against the block.
bike is not down on power.
it's only on idle and clutch in doesn't change it.
if put in to gear tapping disappears then comes back after approx 5 seconds, not as regularly.

currently both cylinder covers are off.
Rear cam chain feels fine, I can't move off the cog at all.

front cylinder when on front TDC has approx half a mm play.
when rotating the crank off front TDC I hear a faint click and I think it's the front chain coming under tension.

bike has done 89,000 km.
-is this bad enough to justify replacing tensioner after checking it
-should I replace the cam chains too
-or am I barking up the completely wrong tree?

New Honda CB1000R

Tonight our time is the big release of the new CB1000R in Europe. It boasts 140 plus ponies and is claimed to be faster to 130kph than a Fireblade. That's not surprising because the Hornet/919 was faster to 160 than a GSXR of the same year, but after 160 the GSXR would leave it in its dust. One jounalist asked why anyone would want that acceleration, well it came in bloody handy passing truck and trailer units.

Anyhoo the motorcycling press will be full of photos and reports starting tomorrow.

Shock and fork spring compressor - Auckland

Heya team, after spending some time with a mister Dave Moss on his suspension setting ride a few weeks back, it's become blatantly evident that my setup is woefully undersprung.

Soo, I'm getting new fork springs and shock spring. I'll be changing the fork oil at the same time for the front, but I don't have a spring compressor

Does anyone have a spring compressor I might be able to borrow or pinch for a couple of weeks? Will be ordering the springs in the next day or so.

Edit: I'm based in Auckland, cheers!!

YouShop disappoints this time around.

I've had good results with YouShop generally but this time not so much.

Parcel cost: US$261

Parcel delivered to YouShop: 28/02
Appears in YouShop: 06/03 charged $51.50
Parcel delivered: 20/03

The delay caused by me having to pay NZPost for:
customs import fee: $42.81
customs GST: $61.05
customs clearance: $40

Total over $200 and 20 days from delivery in Oregon. I don't think this would normally have attracted GST let alone these other costs.

Have things changed, did I do something wrong, what was different about this transaction as opposed to the countless other I've done?

In contrast a parcel from Italy left on the 13/03 delivered 21/03 with only GST and customs fee.

Cheers

Start a mini dirt bike with no pull start?

So I picked up a cheap little dirt bike bike for my son as his first bike. Was told just needed a pull start. So I ordered an alloy one and anew flywheel. Once I got the cover off I realised the last owner has stripped the flywheel bolt so I can't get that off. So I'm pretty stuck

Is there anyway to start these little things? The bolts only a 10mm too.

fasteners for bodywork, where to source?

I tracked down race bodywork for my racebike, but the dzus style fasteners had been lost.

Ordered some from cardwells, but theyre the wrong size, (diameter too big) and they dont seem to sell the right size.

Looks like the ones I need are a 6mm diameter, and about 10-13mm long.

Anyone know where I can source some? prefer closer to NZ for ease of returns if they dont fit. Really keen to actually get this project onto the track, its been sitting around for nearly a year now

Recent Road Trip

Vicki and I have just spent an extended period in and around the central north island on a mini vacation centred on mountain biking. We had a great time…

But that’s beside the point… Driving up there and back we were casual observers of many motorcyclists… Frankly it’s amazing the road toll isn’t higher than it is… Some real eye openers even if we discount the patched up bad men who predictably ride em like they stole em.

By the time we got home we had resolved to sell the big bikes and just potter about home. Then I took the big bike for a spin and thought nah… Too much fun.. But holy crap there are some real winners out there…

HOWEVER – in the central NI – for outright hooliganism you really need a 4 door 4WD ute with big tyres. They are the new supercars, immune to traffic regulations and the laws of physics, they rule supreme on the roads.

Hot tips

How about we share some hot tips - those little things you wish you'd found out years ago?

I'm talking about biking (mostly!). Odds-n-sods we've picked up (sometimes here on KB) that make things easier/better/safer/more fun/more thrilling/cheaper/whatever.

One topic at a time though please to give the assembled brains trust the chance to consider and respond, maybe elaborate or suggest alternatives.

I'll kick off with one: the side stand has an uncanny ability to sink through apparently firm ground like a red hot poker through butter. So, be extra careful about positioning the bike on damp ground like a farm track, or on sticky driveway tarmac in hot weather (lessons learned!). Look for level ground or a slight slope down to the right so the bike ends up close to vertical when parked rather than leaning hard over onto the stand.

Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari - donations please

The Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari was started in 2009 by Mike and Jayne Rattray as a way to show support by my work colleagues at Air New Zealand in Christchurch, for another Air New Zealander, Blair Newton. He’d been recently diagnosed with cancer and this was thought to be a good way to raise money for the Cancer Society, who do such excellent work.

The Safari is a crossing of the Southern Alps via Arthurs Pass from Christchurch to Hokitika, with the majority of participants on 50cc scooters. The idea being that although this can be an uncomfortable ride in wintry weather, that’s nothing compared to what cancer sufferers have to endure.

Blair rode his Nifty Fifty in the 2010 and 2012 events, appearing as The Stig and as Elvis, and in 2011 he rode from Christchurch to Wanganui to ride in the Central Plateau Scooter Challenge to Taupo. Blair passed away in 2014 but the Safari has continued in his memory, and we expect to raise a total of $1,000,000 in donations by this year’s Safari, on May 19.

With my wife Maree, who was also undergoing treatment for her own cancer, I rode in the 2010, 2012, and 2014 events, and she, too, passed away in early 2016. I rode in that year’s Safari as a travelling marshal. I now have Nicki in my life and for her first long ride on a bike (Honda Dio 110) we will attend this year’s Safari. We have plenty of two-up experience, but Nicki is relatively new to taking the controls – it’s a big deal for her to participate.

Would any Kiwi Bikers like to support this event? If so, please go to Nicki’s fund-raising page, and click the green Donate button. Here’s the link:

Every little bit counts – thank you in advance.

2003 Suzuki Boulevard S40 Will Not Start

I have a 2003 Suzuki Boulevard S40 with ~70,000 miles that will not start.

I had been driving quite a ways (80 miles to work and back) a few times a month for about two months. I noticed it was going through oil pretty quickly (noticed via loud valves/engine operation) and added oil (about a quart), which quieted it back down to normal sounding operation.

The next time I rode it, I warmed it up and took off. Initially, going down the street it died while coasting to the street light, so I restarted it and kept going. After continued riding, I noticed somewhat random hesitation and loss of power under load; not quite sputtering, but cut offs in power that increasing revs seemed to mitigate. I hopped onto a main thoroughfare and got to highway speed and cruised for a few miles, with everything seeming fine. After a few minutes, it started to hesitate again going up a slight hill and then died all together. I tried starting in neutral while coasting to a stop, to no avail. I pulled off to the side of the road and continued to try and start it, with no luck.

Currently, the starter will attempt to start, but it sounds strange, louder and almost like a whirring/scraping, definitely not normal like it used to.

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction toward diagnosis

Thanks in advance.

WR450F to road legal?

I believe a couple of you dudes have done this. I'm looking at the Tusk enduro lighting kit (bar the taillight and indicators) and the Ryco plate holder or something minimal like that. Is the stock '08-'10 WR450F taillight okay to use? Thinking of sticking with the stock taillight and finding some slick LED blinkers rather than the dated looking Tusk versions.

Then obviously a set of motard wheels, 320mm disk and bracket. Torpedo7 seems the go despite their prices fluctuating from week to week.

Would like to hear from anyone who has put a WR450F on the road.

WTB Wanted Yamaha RZ50 Tank/seat setup - Converting RD350 into Cafe racer

Hi all

I have acquired a tidy but not matching numbers RD350 - frame to eng is incorrect and bodywork to year of frame also incorrect. Its in very original condition. I was going to do a full restoration on her but as shes a bitsa its better for me to make it into something a bit more fun.

Im after some RZ50 parts I think they are 1999 model onwards but struggling to find specs on them. I would like the tank and seat unit to convert onto the RD350.

I have attached pics of the RZ50 model parts im after - I will be selling RD350 parts to fund the coversion so if anyone would like Rd350 parts please sing out. Picture of actual RD is attached

I do have some New old stock and new repro parts that will be for sale

any 2 stroke carb experts?

Hey

Got a 2011 KTM 300 EXC, over the last few months I've been noticing the engine occasionally missing/stumbling while accelerating.

Have been re-jetting (unsuccessfully) trying to get rid of it and then on a recent ride it sort of struck me that it's only on uphill's that it stumbles.

Last weekend I checked the float height and raised the fuel level by a mm or 2, but on the ride it again started to miss while going up a moderate gravel hill accelerating in 5th and then when the hill flattened off and I accelerated again in the same gear the bike just took off, smooth as.

Any ideas?

Cheers

GN250 ignition timing

Checked the ignition timing on the bike this weekend. We looked into the little hole on the stator case where you can line up the TOP mark with the arrow on the casing. There is a hole on the metal disc in there so presumably this is the measure that you check the strobe against? Next question that I have been able to find an answer to is if the timing is out is it adjustable (and if so how) or if not is it a case of replacing the coil/leads/CDI etc?

Cheers

Insurance - admitting fault

I recently got rear-ended. The third party was apologetic and admitted fault to me in person; we exchanged details etc, then when my insurance company gave him a call he said he never admitted fault and that I fell on my own.

I know you can't get a police report for a non-injury accident, and a phone call to the police where you get the third-party to admit fault on the phone can't be used in court.

So how do you avoid this? Currently, my insurance company is battling with his/him because he won't admit fault.

Plug chop

OK so time for the plug chop. My bike runs good at all ranges except WOT now. I would like to find out if lean or rich. Question is how can I do a plug chop if it doesn’t hold consistent power at WOT, or do I not need to? All the instructions on the web talk about holding it at WOT but this feels dangerous given it’s running condition

Cheers

"Pre-retirement" Road Trip

An interesting one...

I was given this as a loaner whilst my sacirifical anode Piaggio (Following the Guzzi being pinched) is in having the tyres replaced.

It's a Yamaha Maxam 250 - Big in Japan by all accounts and a bit like a jetski on wheels. A Cadillac-style rear end with a pointy nose and lots of... Length. It's a conventional 4-stroke 250cc single cyclinder CVT-equipped scoot underneath but rides like a mini-limo.

It adds to the rich tapestry which is biking

And here was me thinking that I'd ridden just about every type of bike I was going to. Nice and comfy for the airport run I must say
