Action Camera's - What are you folk running?

I've been looking at alternatives to the GoPro (I'm not fucking made of money) and ordered an Akaso EK7000 thinking it'd be perfect and comparable to the GoPro 4 and at $85 a good buy. It's yet to turn up but yesterday I was looking at reviews on other makes and the ThiEYE T5e was rated very highly, has true 4K (the Akaso has that phony 4K), has image stabilization and great audio as far as action cam audio goes. So with the Akaso stil in transit I went ahead and purchased the ThiEYE off of GearBest for $140. From all the test footage and comparo's it looks just as good as the GoPro 5 if not superior in areas. It was really the image stabilization that had me sold. Something you need when riding a bike.

I'm looking forward to getting on the DRZ and getting some crisp footage.

The ThiEYE T5e (GoPro mount compatible)

I also purchased this helmet chin mount from a YouTube vlogger 'A Girland Her Bike' AGHB. Cost roughly $40NZD. Gives a great POV over the bars perspective.

So are you guys using an action cam? What good alternatives to the GoPro have you found?

Annoying neighbors tree.

There is a huge gum tree on our property boundary but on the neighbors side. It's constantly dropping leaves, seeds and branches on my driveway, roof and car.
As annoying as this is I'm more worried about a large branch coming through the roof or the tree crushing the house. Another neighbors has mentioned concern of this too.
The previous owners who built it said they asked the neighbor if they could cut down the tree at their cost but the neighbor wanted to keep It, even though she doesn't live there.
Anyone had any success getting the council to force a neighbor to cut down a tree?20171130_073124.jpg

Chains how to rivet a chain without getting a tight link.

Several bikes I have owned have tight links in the chain that can caused the drive to feel lumpy at slow speeds, also it difficult to check the chain tightness, it can be either too tight or loose, depending on where the tight link is.

Anyone that has riveted links and ended up with a chain that is as flexible on the rivetted link as the rest of them.
Please let me know the secret. The shops do not always get it right also.

I have thought of shaping a spacer to fit in the inside of the link to match the exact dimension of the fitted links so that it cannot press any closer
on the links than it should.

What would you recommend as a rivetting tool.

Interested to hear from those that know.

Freeeeeeeee track day!

....for Honda owners ;)

http://ift.tt/2An8n2I

However the lack of information is frustrating. I've signed up for the Hampton Downs track day this Saturday. I just have no idea what time I need to be there.

Is anyone else heading up there from Hamilton?

If anyone else heard about this, do you have any further info? I did call Honda and they said no confirmation email was normal and were following up with Hampton Downs about starting times etc.

Triumph Thruxton

Hi All

I've just taken delivery of my Thruxton 1200 and managed to put some 150Kms onto it last night. Initial thoughts are broken down as follows:

Engine

Ruddy lovely. In deference to the running in instructions I didn't venture above 4k Rpm but the motor's a real step forward from the air cooled 865 Thruxton I owned 8-9 years ago. Smooth too and it sounds good, even with the standard pipes fitted. Nice pop and burble on the overrun too which I like. A lot.

Ergonomics

Unsurprisingly very similar to my previous Thruxton. Almost sports tourer in where it places you and leaned forward but not extremely so. It's better for open road riding as opposed to round town type activity but doesn't feel uncomfortable for me. I'm 6'00". The only negative is that the rear of the fuel tank, where the cut outs are for your legs, is too narrow. This makes it a little awkward to grip the tank with your knees. Triumph could have made the tank a litre bigger and given you a bit more to hold on to. It's only 14 litres after all.

Chassis

Mine's the standard model so has the normal way-up forks and preload-only adjustable rear shocks. I'm quite happy with this and the ride seems to be a good balance between firmness and reasonable ride comfort. The brakes, whilst being normal two piston calipers, seem to be fine to me. I also found out that the ABS works too...

Looks

As always this is subjective. However I think it's pretty close to being perfect. A small Dart flyscreen (On its way) will help too.

Other stuff

IMHO the standard bike isn't $5.5k worse than the R model. I also like the colour of mine (Mettalic emerald Green or BRG with a modern twist depending on your viewpoint). The modes and TC are welcome additions but once I've set them I suspect that I'll leave them alone. Incidentally I bought the bike from New Plymouth Motorcycle Centre who were good to deal with and only too happy to help.

Does anyone else have a Thruxton on here? What do 'ya reckon to it?

:niceone:

Show off your pets.

Hello, everyone! I’ve created this thread for us to discuss the furry companions in our lives, our pets. Aside from my kids, there is another small creature putting a smile on my face, our Pomeranian, Cuddy. He loves to play with my kids, follow my wife around the house, urging for a cuddle, hang out in his own dog kennel, and even hitch a ride on our family road trips. He’s been with us for many years and has really grown to be a part of our family. How about you, fellas? What are your furry friends?

Fell Off. A stationary bike. Which was on its side stand...

Like the title says, I fell off a stationary bike that was on the side stand. Without the engine even running. How stupid is that? :weird:

Simple enough. As I stepped off, I caught my foot on the tail bag. Which unbalanced me and I fell backwards onto the asphalt footpath. I guess, like Ian Botham, I didn't quite get me leg over...

I thought "Oh damn, I'll just roll." (Again.)

Not this time. The foot catch rotated my alignment to the ground so that I fell flat onto the lower back. There was a moment of absolute stunned silence whilst I listened to all the internal body sirens wailing. Thought "This is not going to be good."

Two minutes of lying there I decided I had to stand up. Dragged over to the fence and used it to hoist upright again. Some very serious pain going on at the time.

Well a week later an x-ray showed a compression fracture of the L4 vertebra. Which is why I am still unable to do most anything. Wondered why the pain was not going away. A week of ideal riding weather and I'm stuck with a busted arse.

I just bet ACC will use this to rant on about motorbikes again. Even though the bike itself wasn't really involved.

Moral of the story: If you're gunna get your leg over, make sure you DO it.

Not a happy camper right now.

Dyno for sale (unfortunately)

As is life renting a house in AKL, I have been unable to secure space in my new flat for the inertial dyno I bought off of Sketchy.

It is pretty much in the same condition I received it in, apart from I cleaned up the wiring a little.
Good for bikes up to 80hp in its current state.

Would like $2.5k for it. Pickup from East AKL before the 14th of Dec. Comes with the Arduino wired up for running simpleDyno, and a wideband controller which I have not tested.
If you aren't familiar with Arduino I can find an evening to get you up and running if you are in AKL.

First bike - brand new Honda Shadow (150cc) or a 2012 Hyosung Aquila (250cc)

Hi,

Just looking at buying my first bike. I posted here before, and established that Hyosung is better than a Keeway.

Round two (I'll be buying later this week) is a Hyosung Aquila 2012 or a Honda Shadow 2018. Both are similar prices, and the Hyosung has only done 6500kms.

I need a commuter, but I want to have a bit of speed. I've been assured the 150cc will get me around and go the distance, but not quickly. And for just over $3000 (all inclusive) a near-new Hyosung 250 is a good deal and will certainly fit the category of commute and distance.

Any help will be appreciated. I don't want to waste my money on naivety.

WTB Bits to customise a CT110

Hey dudes. School's out for summer so I'm gonna have some free time to work on my Posties. I'm hoping to get some cheap bits that may be lying in the back of people's garages to attempt chucking on. I'm keen on a front end with a disk brake, perhaps off a 80cc motorcrosser, but I'm also keen to hear silly ideas.

I've got 2 machines. One that gets the rough and silly mods. The other one I hope to do up nicely, with the bits taken off for the rough bike being replaced by upgraded stuff.

Cheers

Yamaha Mechanic in NZ

Hey guys

We will soon arrive with our two XT660 bikes in New Zealand and travel the islands for about 3 months. As we would need to do a little check up on my XT660R, I was wondering if an of you knows of a nice Yamaha Mechanic or even just someone who has a FI Diagnosis Tool for the 2005 model? It would be helpfull if we do not have to spend too much money and do the diagnosis ourselfs, as we travel for a very long time and every penny counts :)
Thanks so much and cheers from India

ASITT (Another South Island Tour Thread)...

Hey all, I haven't been on here or posted for a while. I was reading some of the other south island tour threads, but I don't want to hijack another thread, so this is a new one.

I'm planning to do a 1-2 week quick ride/tour around the south island in December or January, starting and ending in CHC.
I've always wanted to do a tour on a nice, large-engined, modern bike, something like a BMW R1200GS or similar.
I like all the fancy stuff on the brand new ones, but I can't afford to buy a new one, so I'm thinking of 3 possible options:

Option 1: I can do a self-guided tour, where the accommodation is all booked, route all planned, and the rental bike is included (2017 BMW R1200GS or R1200RS) (About $6-7K including air fares to/from CHC and food, petrol, rental/accommodation/itinerary/gps package). It's a crap-ton of money to spend on a one week holiday, I could buy a very good motorbike for that kind of spend...
https://goo.gl/ekwr5a

Option 2: Use the same bike rental outfit to rent the same 2017 R1200GS for 8 days, but plan the tour route and itinerary myself, and find places to stay with AirBnB (About $4K including air fares to CHC, Food, petrol, Accommodation, Bike Rental).
https://goo.gl/JS4LZd

Option 3: I could buy an older touring bike, like an old R1100RT or similar with reg/wof/luggage/panniers, anywhere in NZ, fly there to pick up the bike, ride to the south island, do the tour, ride back to AKL, and then try to sell the bike for as close to what I bought it for as possible. The final tour cost here be might be under $1-2K after selling the bike (depending on what, if anything, I lose through reselling the bike afterwards), but there is more hassle, and time spent, and upfront cost: Buying the bike, organising insurance, The long ride maybe from AKL to CHC and from CHC to AKL again afterwards, including ferry crossings, selling it again afterwards, etc. But maybe that's part of the fun?
https://goo.gl/FFe5nX

This is a rough idea of the tour route I had in mind:
http://ift.tt/2n2QZuK
SCUMp3H.png

Basically something like, CHC - Tekapo - Queenstown - Franz Josef - Punakaiki - Hanmer Springs - Kaikoura - CHC.

So, I'm open to ideas and suggestions: Important stuff to pack? Hints for making the plans? Ideas of places and roads not to miss in that area? I'm not very good at planning this sort of thing. I'll be touring solo too, by the way. Best of the three options I've mentioned above, and reasons why? Maybe a fourth option I hadn't considered? If I go the buy/tour/sell route, things to look for and avoid in older touring BMWs? I've been looking at 2001-2008 bikes between about $4-9K: R1200GS, R1200RT, R1150RT, R1100RT, Honda VFR800, Triumph Tiger 955i, etc. Which will be the most comfortable for touring, the most capable/safe/reliable, and will hold its value the best, and be the easiest to resell after the tour?

Cheers!

Plastic tank repair / replacement. Help needed! PE 400.

I'm posting on behalf of a mate who has resurrected his 1981 Suzuki PE 400X. The tank has suffered crazing and is proving impossible to seal. Are their any products available to repair it? The curve along the lower part of the tank is the problem, the plastic is quite fragile and leaking.

Even betterer, does any member have one lying in their shed? Apparently the PE 250 tank of the same vintage fits.

Any help much appreciated. This is the last hurdle before the old beast can be released into the wild again.

Are these carbs easy to work on? Is there any special cleaner needed? I have been told that you cannot clean them properly without using a carb cleaning "bath" that somehow shakes and cleans them at the same time.
Any recommendations as to a decent shop BOP area or could get them off and courier somewhere?

Trepidation

I approached the town centre as quietly as I could, a large crowd had formed into what looked like a gang of trouble with an even larger number of respectable looking citizens encircling them and many just milling about holding childrens hands. For some reason a group parted allowing me and 2 other riders to enter the mass, inside was a plethora of bikes all in tidy rows, some of these bikes were from the 60s and 70s but mostly appeared to be from the last couple of decades.

I wondered why I was placing myself at such huge risk by going on a group ride with so many unknown characters, I was even paying someone for this extremely risky pastime. I kept telling myself it was for a good cause and many children would be rewarded on Christmas day.

I have to say my fears were unfounded and the organization was brilliant, about 300kms of wonderful riding ended with a smile on the dial.

Thank you Ulysses Wanganui for a wonderful day.

I know what a chain block is an it's good for getting leverage and lifting some shit, but all this blockchicanery talk keeps cropping up, something about using computers to suck money from the internet? Is it just another fancy online scam or is there something to it?

Exhaust reducer

I’ve got an aftermarket exhaust that came with the standard 3 set reducer sleeves., the smallest being 35mm. My header pipes are 35mm too. My question is how damn tight do you have to tighten the clamp to get these reducers to work. I’ve got all 3 in (like Russian dolls) but it doesn’t seem to want to tighten. Any suggestions on what might work or I for it sounds as though I am doing something wrong.

Cheers

First bike purchase - options are Hysosung or Keeway. Need advice.

Hi all,

I've just started a full-time job (just graduated) and need a vehicle. My price range is capped at $2000, or I'll never be able to buy one and I'll be stuck using public transport for months. I'm wanting something economical to commute but with enough grunt to go from (for example) Napier to Wellington. My basic research has led to a 250cc.

There are two that I've come across, both of which seem great. One is a 2004 Hyosung Aquila, which has done around 30,000ks. $1400 with a helmet. Well maintained, bike enthusiast family (and seller works in bike distributions) with rego and warrant into early next year. By all accounts has relatively new parts.

The other is a 2008 Keeway Supershadow, with 7,700kms and a bit of rust from being outside due to limited shed space. $1300 ONO. Is quite a bit further out from where I am (so a few hundred additional on transport) and has really only been used for commuting to University in Auckland. Brand new tyres. No rego, WOF until November next year.

I'm really torn, although I'm leaning far more towards the Hyosung because it seems to be a better model, a little heavier (for long distance travel) and has been well used and looked after. I've spoken extensively to the seller and she seems genuine. My only hesitation is that the Keeway is a little cheaper (depends what I could get and transport) and has substantially less kms.

Hoping your collective wisdom can help.

Bikes 2010 Suzuki DR650SE

Hello all,

Just putting a feeler out there to see if anyone would like to check out my 2010 DR650SE I'm about ready to sell. Here's the story:

- Bought @ 36000kms. I was 3rd owner (have the NZTA doc to show that). Toured the country on it last year. I'm Canadian and my working holiday visa is expiring so I'll be leaving the country in a few months and have to sell.
- WoF expiry 25/10/2018 (did it a month ago)
- Rego expiry 25/09/2018 (and you know how expensive regos are!)
- New chain/sprockets @ 50000 (have invoice)
- Brand new Pirelli MT90s were put on last week (have invoice)
- Center stand (not a stock feature)
- Skid plate (aka belly pan)
- Heated grips
- FMF Q4 exhaust. Just yesterday I went to Cycleworks and had Damon make a custom baffle to keep noise legal but same grunty sound and performance
- Good quality side and rear luggage racks
- Givi top box (think helmet + jacket + a few other things)
- Cortech saddlebags (these exapand nice and wide)
- Barkbusters
- Artrax handlebar risers
- Sargent seat (comfortable!)
- Lock (attach to rotor)
- Tank bag
- Valve timing just checked
- If you want it - A large Hunting and Fishing waterproof bag along with mesh netting to hold it, and some rachets to keep everything in place
- I've done regular oil changes, kept new chain clean and lubed, regularly cleaned/oiled air filter

This was my 9th bike and my first dual sport. My next bike in Canada will be dual sport again - probably the same DR. Yes, a badass Bandit 1200 is fun, but this thing can do anything and go anywhere, and after touring all of NZ during what seems to have been one of your worst years for weather, it can obviously handle a road trip too. I started on Shinko SR244s which were pretty good all around, but these MT90s are just beautiful - glad I didn't cheap out this time. 70/30 on/off road. Check out the reviews - they're great for the DR.

This was my original post on this forum before I came to NZ (the picture links are broken). I'm glad I chose a bike over a campervan.

Here are some pics: http://ift.tt/2i4kdaU

It has one of those "$6" DIY windscreens installed, but it has a small crack and my girlfriend put a badass transformers logo on there. I can remove it first if you'd like - unless you have a thing for Optimus Prime...

I'm currently near Wellington headed to Auckland area for a week or so. After that I'll be near Rotorua (unless you buy my bike in Auckland first!). I leave Wellington tomorrow heading north, in case I should stop somewhere for an interested party.

Let me know what you think. I'm looking for $5,000 ONO. I think that's a fair price based on what you'd pay for a new DR, what's out there right now, the rego/wof status, as well as all the extra it comes with. But by all means if that price isn't fair please let me know!

Cheers,
Ryan

YZF R15 Starting issues

Hi all,

I have an R15 bucket and over the last couple of days I have Fitted a new cam and swapped out the EFI for an OKO carb. I turned the fuel system into gravity feed by removing the fuel line from the pump to the tank outlet and removing the power wire for the pump inside the tank. I also un plugged the injector and cut off the loom bundle that would have gone to the tail light and indicators etc.
Now when I try to start the bike the dash lights up as per usual and the tac cycles but I have no neutral light and the bike wont crank over on the starter, I tried to push start it but it doesn't want to push start either.

Anyone have any good ideas?

I also tried plugging the injector back in and bridging the connector that would have powered the fuel pump to try fool the ECU and that didn't help. Still not sure why I have lost the neutral light, wonder if I have cut off something important in the loom bundle...

Parts & Accessories Rear Paddock Stand

best bike stand i have had the pleasure of using, and I have used plenty when I was mechanicing. Reversible for both bobbins/spools and flat bottom swing arms, this is one of the few bike stands that i was happy to use with out a helper. retractable handle slides under the rear tyre of most bikes when they are on the stand so there is no handle sticking out to trip on.

text below stolen from the trackside web site

The Trackside Rear Paddock Stand is capable of lifting both spools and flat bottom sided swing arms. It is constructed of heavy duty 38mm steel tubing with a tough powder coated finish. The dual wheels makes the lifting action smoother than ever while the retractable handle makes it easier to store. Whether you are making repairs or just doing some general maintenance to your motorcycle a rear stand makes life a bit easier.

Features:

Heavy-duty 38mm steel tub construction
Durable powder coat finish
Dual wheel casters on each support leg provide total stability
Multi-fit support arms compatible with spool and flat swing arms
Retractable handle

Moving to AUS - ship bike or not?

Hi all!

In April '18 i will be moving to Melbourne permanently.

Has anyone on here shipped their bike to Australia from Auckland, NZ and wants to share their experience? I'm just weighing up my options to determine whether its worth it.

The bike is a 2017 Victory High Ball with barely 2k on the clock which i want to bring with me. I got it brand new and its my pride&joy.

I started looking into shipping costs by emailing a few freight forwarders and researching Australian duty costs etc.

Sea Freight appears to be about $2k (this seems like a rip off?). Can it be done cheaper?

GST(10%) and Duty(5%) on the bikes market value of lets say $15k add another $2,250. Misc. costs are another $250 so all up im looking at approx $4.5k which seems ridiculous. Have I calculated everything correct?

Resale values of Victory have plummeted. If i sell it in NZ i'll be lucky to get $16k so i've lost $6k there. Its a lose-lose situation me thinks.

Waterproof Summer Gloves

I'm after is a pair of summer weight gloves which:
  • Are really waterproof i.e. can handle several hours of heavy rain
  • Either don't have a liner or the liner is firmly fitted so it doesn't get tangled etc.
  • Don't want thermal linings etc that will be too warm in summer
  • Well made
  • Are gauntlet style i.e. long cuff
  • Enough feel that I can get cards out of my wallet at petrol stations or operate a camera without taking them off (if I have to stop I like to do it for as short a time as possible:-))
  • Good length on fingers and thumb (thumbs are often too short for me on gloves)
  • Ideally available at a shop in Christchurch so I can try before I buy

All the waterproof gloves I've found seem to be made for winter. In winter I use a pair of Kinco gloves which I cover with rain-off over-gloves so got that covered.

If not waterproof then a glove that can quickly dry would be ok (e.g. some sort of textile glove?)

Got two pairs of summer leather gloves without liners but neither are waterproof. Normally I take both and then just swap them in one set get wet but they can take ages to dry. I know I could just put the Rain-offs over the top but hate having to stop to do this when riding

Anyone got any suggestions?

Finding place to work on bike in Wellington

Hi KB

I just got back to Wellington after been in Sydney for the last 2.5 years, and I brought my bike back with me from Australia.

My bike that I brought back is an 1985 MZ ETZ 250, however it needs a bit of work before it can go for its entry cert and rego as the previous owner never used it, it just sat in his collection for the last 10 years. My original plan was to take it to rising sun workshop and fix it up myself with help from a mate in Sydney. It was a great place as I was living in an apartment complex and couldn't work on the bike at home, basically at RSW you could work on your own bike and they would provide all the tool equipment required, and the occasional bit of advice if required.

Turns out I am in the same situation here, where I am living in an apartment and I'm not allowed to work on the bike there, is there any shared workshop spaces like rising sun workshop in Wellington (Ideally in the city)?

Alternatively any recommendations of bike shops in the city that would be at least mildly competent on working on an old east german bike?

And finally so I have it in the back of my mind for when everything is done, where is the closest entry compliance shop to Wellington City for motorbikes?

Cheers

Andrew

Or any freedom camp/or camping site recomendations? Hidden gems? Or if anyone is intrested in going for a ride as im passing through the area?

I’ve had my 2012 yz125 for about 6 months but I bought it in winter so I haven’t ridden it much and I’m just starting to ride it again but it’s fouling plugs every hour or so, I’ve checked the electrical system it’s fine, I’ve cleaned the carb and air filter.
The weird thing is it’s completely stock. Any ideas?

Bike preparation, who reads the rules regarding numbers

It amazes me that a huge chunk of our road race bikes simply don't have numbers applied according to the rule book!
Why would they risk disqualification, and a big drama turning up to the meetings with bikes prepared like this?
Do they not respect the paying public enough to present bikes that they can identify to make their day better?
Do they not understand the safety issues around poorly numbered bikes?
It's not just the odd one either.

HD 883 or 1200

Hi team

I've just picked up my first HD sportster 883 and am wrapped with it. Alas I'm after some advice... when I purchased the bike the previous owner told me it was fitted with a 1200 kit, is there any way apart from tearing the motor down, to tell if the bikes indeed been fitted with the kit, as again this is my 1st Harley and I don't have previous experience to compare power difference ect.

Shes a '96 fitted with screaming eagle pipes + intake if that helps

Please excuse the ignorance and any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks in advance

Cassina - advice

Hello Cassinna

Many on here are starting to question your

"I have read", "it has been said", "others have said", "I saw somewhere", "on other threads", "people agree" etc etc etc

How about you actually show the threads, quotes, links etc when you are quoting them rather than say you don't have the time to look them up.

I think most on here will now question all of the above from here on in!

A couple of the nice things about being in Australia are ABC and SBS...

However, that's not the case here in Godzone...

German Couple just arrived

Hello everybody,

we, a german couple just arrived in Auckland on Tuesday. The last days we put together our bikes (Africa Twin and Transalp), which we shipped here from Germany.
We got 3 1/2 months to discover your beautiful country. If some of you would be interested to get in contact with us, we would be happy.
Now we just left Auckland heading north.

Moped registation (factory restrictor still in place.) Registered to April 2018

Recent tyres (17" front & rear)

I've owned this for maybe 14 years. New tyres a couple of years ago that are barely run in.

Could use a tidy up. Has a few battle scars. Old & new.

I wanted to sell this a few years ago but one of the kids wanted me to wait to sell it until he had his license and could ride it. So I did. Then he did. But then he dropped it in the wet at a roundabout. So he's back on the GN125.

Force shift, transmission damage

While stretching I accidentally pushed down on my shifter and shifted from 2nd to 1st.

Throttle was open to maybe 3-4000 revs and heard a clunk as it shifted down.

I heard some rattling for the next 10minutes commuting and then it stopped.

What should I do? How damaged are the dogs

Hello, everyone!

2 Stroke 6v power surging

Yamaha RX125 1979. Well, here goes. I have been working on this little bike for awhile now and i had it all ready to go for a vin. I have put LED lights on wich were working perfectly fine and were not drawing too much power. I took it out for a semi decent ride around town and once i got home i realized that the right hand indicators, the number plate light and tail light were all blown. I have brought all new ones to replace them and are about to wire them all up. I have done quite abit of research on the net about this and there seems to be nothing else on this problem. I cant seem to find any 6v voltage regulators or surge protectors anywhere on the net. Is this problem just a freak thing and wont occur again? Or is there a way to limit it so it doesn't surge? Or even get it to pop a fuse before it blows the lights. Thanks in advance.

My high beam points to the sky. I just want to take the bulb out and check it. The retainer is the type that you twist and it should pop off - so I think. I can't figure out if you twist it left or right. I have twisted it hard both ways ... just don't want to apply more pressure. I have a manual and if does not say which way to twist.
