Pete's TF125 build

Well here's just a quick build to try and produce something raceable from something that looked pretty but was not. Pete saw the pics of the Orange NSR on Tardme and bought in faith.

When it arrived from Auckland clearly all was not well. In no order, the brakes were useless, the crazy big rear tyre made it handle like a truck, it was also offset to one side to get it to clear the chain. Uh Duh!

Supposedly the bike was faster than a warm FXR. Clearly that was a lie. The bike had never been raced I'd guess and the clutch slipped so bad it was a joke. And it vibrated.

Engine out and in my garage. Clearly everything ignition, carb, and mostly the porting were stock. The crank looked rebuilt and supposedly it has a TS gearbox in it which provides better ratios. We'll be checking that obviously, but there is a spare bottom end and that is a TS.

So the plan is to build a petrol push and ride engine for my good mate Pete that will give him the 2stroke fix he desires and be more competitive than his mostly stock FXRAGH. It will want to be grunty as it has to pull his, er. . . manly carcass about the track.

I decided we weren't going to stray into too much development. Just built with good parts which allow more power through good engineering.

At this point I'd like to thank our benefactor TZ350 who super generously sent some GP clutch parts, an RGV250 rodkit and all manner of odds and sods for the build. As well as some good ideas. GPs have an extra clutch plate and the inner basket swaps over. The outer basket has a different gear and matching gear doesn't fit the crank.
But the basket was better with less slop so I swapped them over and helicoiled the rivet holes and bolted together with lots of studlock.

4 bikes I am considering at the moment.

KTM Superduke 990, TL1000r, Speed Triple 1050 and Monster S4R.
Which of these would be the most comfortable to use a tank of gas on? Not SH1 style riding!
Good points on any of the above.
Bad points on any of the above.
I am reasonably familiar with the specs on these bikes. Cheers, Laava

R6 Stator Gasket Change - What to check

Hey guys,

So I've got an oil leak with the stator cover - no problem there I've ordered a new gasket and can do the job fine. Just wondering though is there anything that I can look for when I've got all this off? Like signs of wear, etc?

I just thought that since I'll have the cover off it's a good time to have a little hunt for any potential issues.

Cheers guys!

OK I know we have a firearms thread but this is deserving of a wider audience. For those who may not know, the 50AE is one of the most powerful handgun cartridges, bigger even than Dirty Harry's 44 Magnum. In the photo it is the one on the left. For comparison the 9mm as used by our police is second from the right, and this instance size definitely does matter.

That anyone would expect one volume of Encyclopaedia Brittanica to stop that from a foot away is beyond comprehension. He won't do that again.

Waterview Tunnel Opening

There's a rumour going round in the construction industry that Auckland's Waterview Tunnel will be opening this weekend.
It is expected to be Opening on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

If you are in the area and want to be one of the first through then I'd head there around 6am on Sunday morning because that is normally when the night time motorway closures have to end.

I could be off the mark here and I don't want to be responsible for disappointing anyone so do your own research if you are thinking of checking it out. (I'll be looking for any notifications of closures on the nor western and south western motorways around the area)

Help?

Okay, totally new here 😅 so have no idea if this is the right place to post.
Bought myself an ole ZG1000 (Concours, but this one has a prettier face) the other day and have spent a few hours trying to get her going. Have reached the stage where we're turning over and almost catching but not quite. I've put a new battery in, drained carbs, cleaned tank, and have got it to the stage of almost starting but not quite...

Have a feeling it's plug related (or carb related?) however Air NZ wouldn't let me bring my tools down so I'm stuck without the right size plug socket and am scratching my head a little over this one. Anyone in Chch keen to come give me a hand? I'm in Springston atm and will be here till tomorrow evening. Would be eternally grateful!

Help required in Springston Christchurch - posting on behalf

Hi guys and girls,

I have some friends who are currently in Springston who have gotten themselves into a bit of a pickle and could do with some help.

They have bought a GZ1000 (80s something model) with the hopes of getting it running and doing some touring round on it but they can't actually get it started and have extremely limited tools / resources available.
If anyone is around that area and keen to have some good karma sent their way I'm sure they would appreciate the help.
Shouldn't be too hard, probably need to pull the plugs and clean them, maybe push it down the road a bit.

If anyone is around an able to help please flick me a message and ill try to get you in touch.

Thanks All!

Helmet visor icing over

I rode the bike up from Christchurch to Picton to get the ferry last weekend. I stopped at Murchison for the night as planned. Hampden Hotel is the best...they let me use their garage so the bike would be undercover.

Left Murch Monday morning and it was -3 at 9.00am with claggy fog/drizzle. I was warm enough, but heres the kicker...as I headed into the hills going North, I had to keep wiping the helmet visor as it was fogging over. Only, it wasn't. The damn thing was actually icing up because of the cold! Never, in my 45 years of motorbiking have I had that happen! Just had to keep wiping it with a free (?) hand and hoping for the best. Did ride out of it after about 1/2 hour, but was scary. Couldn't stop as on the hills, in the fog in the middle of nowhere. No traffic around. Left the helmet open a crack, but was worried my glasses would go the same way!!!

Has anyone had that problem? Helmet is Shoei with pinlock visor, so no probs there. I guess in the future I could use anti-icing stuff like you use on car windscreens, but who would carry that around on the off chance? And besides, I dont intend to be riding in that cold too often... hmmm..never been to a Brass Monkey or Cold Kiwi...hmmm.

On another note, I have a new pair of winter riding gloves but dont like them as I find they are too bulky. I bought a pair of overmitts (Rainoffs) especially for the trip and wore them the whole way over shorty summer gloves. They worked a treat. Fingers a bit cold, but was really impressed with them.

My bike was the only one on the ferry on Monday. Ferry crew (Interislander) were really helpful and tied down the bike!

Gang Protocol

Whats the accepted rules in NZ by gangs or motorcycle clubs for wearing badges, patches etc?

I am interested in how club badges/patches etc are accepted on jackets, I know overseas the rocker type badges are usually under the chapters or club names etc.

Are rocker type badges ok to place under club badges or chapter badges etc here in NZ? or is this strictly for the Outlaw type motorcycle clubs?

The HOG members I have seen appear to have their Chapter badges usually up high on there back, then their HOG members badge, pins on the front etc and rocker patches on the sides, I have heard this was done with an understanding or acceptance from the other motorcycle clubs.

Cleaning chain

I'm trying to find something to clean the chain with. I've got an o-ring and was advised that a metal brush (brass or something) wouldn't be suitable and I'd need a nylon one? I've tried bunnings and super cheap but can't find a nylon one.

Any ideas where I can get one?

I was thinking of using a toothbrush but figured it it was soft enough to be used on my teeth, it wouldn't be hard enough to be used in a chain?

Thanks

Cold Beer and Rain

That feeling when…

Putting off the day’s ride is not an option. The unspoken hope that the rain will ease is a constant revolving thought as you suit up, but you’re doing it anyway. The bike is ready, you are ready and your pillion is ready. The rain seems to have increased in the last 10 minutes, or maybe it’s that unspoken thought playing a mind game with you?

Fifteen minutes into the ride and you’re thinking this is not the best idea, I could be home in the dry, watching Saturday morning trash TV. However, mind on the job, and also how wet things have become in a very short space of time. Body is still dry thankfully, nothing worse than that ‘’where’s the water getting in?’’ feeling so early in the day. First stop and time to change gloves, yes I remembered to put in an extra pair. Back on the road, the rain is that heavy that you can feel it through your textile jacket hitting your arms, I have to remind myself why we are doing this again.

The wind from the left is fairly strong, and it’s a bit exposed along the coast. Should devoid ourselves of at least one weather element when we head inland. The rain has eased to the point that you can almost feel things drying out (almost) I know there’s a town down there, but the fog suggests otherwise. Yip there it is, do we stop? A visor up conversation with my lovey pillion and we decide that the weather ahead looks ‘’promising’’ so we ride on looking to stop at the next town about 40 k’s up the road.

Then out of nowhere it’s as dark as hades up ahead, and right on cue, just as we begin to feel dry, the rain starts up again. Fresh road works as well, but I am sure the bike will be clean enough by the time we get home. We reach the next town and stop for a pie and coffee, anticipating the rain will finally fuck off.

Alas it does not.

It is now about 5:30pm and quite dark as we approach the Southern Motorway. A safe speed is around 60kph in this weather, concentrating on the red tail light beacon on the bike in front of me, it’s about as far ahead as I can see. Finally the lights of home come into view, it has been a very long day. Twelve hours on the road and I turn the bike off. We stand there dripping and slowly removing our gear, looking and feeling shagged, but laughing at the past few hours out there on the road. Tipping the water out of our boots was the final step in completing the days ride.
The bike is not as clean as I had earlier thought, and neither are we, but those gloves that I changed at the first stop have kept my hands dry for the rest of the ride. Any regrets? Can’t be, we are home safe.

…the ride is done and you’re in warm, dry clothes, drinking a cold beer talking over the day that was with your mates.

They too have their stories…

Bike not starting after going to mechanics for repairs

Hi guys 1st time posting so if I need to remove/add anything let me know. Recently had my Honda CBX250RS (which has been customed into a cafe racer style) serviced at a mechanic as the right hand engine cover had a micro-crack in it causing it to leak oil. They welded it up and it all seemed to be going fine until 2 days later the bike lost all power going up a hill and does not start up again. When I go to start it I hear a clunking noise which was not there before (sounding like the piston is rubbing on something maybe?) and the bike turns over fine, but will not start up (Have tried crash starting it also and engine turns over with that same noise but won't start). I have established that the engine hasnt seized as will lurch if started in 1st gear. Have little experience with the mechanical side of bikes so thought I would ask you lads. Am trying to get some ideas on what could be wrong and if the mechanic is liable?

Any help is appreciated

Question on standard stairway for two storey house Porirua

Is anyone in the building trade able to give me a suggested ballpark figure to give me an idea about the cost of getting a standard stairway built for a house in the Porirua area.

This is to be a standard carpet quality stairway (presumably with chip board treads and timber nosings etc). The stairway requires to be 1 metre wide and is split in two at a landing where the stairway does a 180 deg reverse i.e. go up one stair to landing turn right on landing which is 1 metre wide and 2 metres long then go back up second set of stairs to top storey. House is standard ceiling height of 2.4m so from floor to floor is about 2.65m.

So what is ballpark cost and who would you recommend as the stair manufacturer? I can search on line and found Stylecraft Stairways as one local manufacturer. I see they are offering free measure ups on projects over $20,000 and I thought surely the stairway of a normal two storey house is not that expensive, or is it?

A rough ballpark would give me an idea as to whether to start the project at all.

Your comments please.

BMW rear brake hose

My BMW F650 (1994) needs a new rear brake hose (leaking where the rubber hose meets the metal fitting).

BMW have quoted $160 for a new hose, but not in stock.

I live in Hamilton and the bike is in Auckland, so I'm trying to find a way of obtaining a new hose and fitting it all in a single visit.

Some have told me that the old solution of take the old hose to a brake hose specialist who makes a new one the same is no longer a good idea as it could be knocked back in a WOF inspection.

I guess my questions are :
Is $160 reasonable for a new OEM, rubber brake hose ?
Is there anyone in Auckland who can make a new brake hose ?
Any comments on replacement hoses & WOF inspection ?

Thanks

JIS screwdrivers and all that bollocks

So no doubt you've read about JIS screwdrivers. If not the story goes that Japanese Industry Standard screws are what the Japanese use on their motorbicylmobiles. But Philips are pretty close and nobody notices. Posidrives are just wrong.

So I've read that as long as you push Philips are just as good.
So I decided to order some Vessel brand bits off EvilBay.

Well I took them into the garage and dabed some blue from a metal marker pen in the top parts of the slots.

Then I tried them in Different screws in an engine conveniently on the bench. Wow, they fit well. So I try the same size Philips I have. They fit well. But the difference is that I can wobble it around in a small circle. With the JIS ones, nowhere near as much. Huh!

So I try a tight screw, previously I'd decides I better break out the impact driver. Philips, fail. JIS, success.

OK I'm sold.

NZ South Island bike trip

Hi All

A mate of mine from the UK is looking to come over here next year to catch the Burt Munro Festival. In addition we'll be biking around the South Island starting in Nelson and returning there some 10-12 days later.

I have some ideas as to where to go (West Coast and via Queenstown) but this is an area that I've not explored myself yet and as such I'm looking for some advice please.

Who's done this themselves and are there any areas I really need to avoid?

Thanks.

Desperately need help ...

Hi.
I have been advised by a friend to request from members some support . My son desperately needs a lawyer who is a motorcyclist and lives in Christchurch, NZ. Following a serious accident 8 weeks ago where a motorist pulled out in front of my son which resulted in several injuries. After weeks in hospital and a questionable Serious Crash Unit investigation the police want to prosecute my son of dangerous driving. The vehicle driver's defense is simply that he didn't see him. My son does not believe that a lawyer who is not a bike rider, would be anything more than a presence in the court and he wants to fight this injustice. Please assist. Thank you in advance.

2018 YZF450 - tuner app

What are you thoughts on the 'smartphone tuning' options on the new YZF? Something you'd use? Waste of time?

Replacing the WR

So, I've kinda half assed tried to sell my WR450, firstly because I did a stint overseas and then because I wanted a bike more for the tarmac and gravel than offroad.

I've since moved to Otago, probably one of the only better 'adventure riding' compared to Marlborough, and now find myself wanting a bike like the WR again
After having 2 decent offers on it I kinda found myself thinking, WTF would I actually replace this with that would be as much fun other than another WR (which financially is pointless). The only other bike that seems to be appealing would be a road legal 2 stroke, or I've even been tempted to get back in 4x4ing so I can stop worrying about ice all the time

So, I put the question to you guys, any great ideas?

Brand new bikes are out btw.

Chur!

Where to start?

Bought couple dirt bikes last month in the hope that I'd have something to do in the winter months. Haven't ridden dirt bikes since I was 13 (many years ago).
Wanting to ride trails really and have no desire at this point to mx ride.

I have a yzf250 and a rmz 450. I bought the 450 thinking it wouldn't be too much faster than my drz400sm I bought couple years ago...... Guess I learnt a lesson there didn't I.

So Riding the 250 for now seems prudent.

I'm wondering what essentials do I need for just riding around Woodhill and similar trails?
Obviously helmet and gloves go without saying.

Do I need Armour, knee braces and all the mx gear if I'm just riding trails?
Do I need proper mx boots?

Is there a noob instructional post I couldn't find?

Any help appriciated.

I'm gonna head out now for a quick ride and see what I learn my usual way (the hard way).

Cheers all.

Auckland Motorbike clubs

Hi all,

I know there is a thread about this already but its 3-4yrs old now.

Anyway …. My dad and I have recently started riding again. We both have V-twin cruisers and are looking for clubs, people and/or events that we could share our passion of riding with.
Ideally we prefer the classic, vintage and V-twin scene over sports bike but we are not picky just looking for a good bunch of people to ride with.

Is there any clubs/groups in the Auckland region that have regular rides/meets?

We don’t have any friends that ride so it’s hard getting word of mouth information from anywhere. The internet has provided very little information apart from the ‘Two Wheel Club’ in Auckland.

We were riding last Sunday (11th June) and came across the vintage motorbike club having their annual fish&chip cruise to Kaiaua/Miranda. That was amazing as we saw some really cool bikes (old Vincents, 20’s Harley and some 40’s Indian Chiefs), met Hugh Anderson and other interesting people. Unless I heard wrong they have nothing online about them?!

Many thanks,

A thumper carb jetting question

I recently purchased a Jap language Factory Service Manual for the Honda GB400 and it shows pilot jet at 45 and main at 168-My GB500 FSM states pilot at 48,which is fine, but the main at 152.-Is it correct that a bike with 100cc less would have a main jet 16 sizes higher? It doesn't quite seem right to me.Any carb gurus out there can answer this?-Cheers.

Suzuki M109R

So, are there many out there? What are your impressions of your ride...... I've been out of the game for quite a while and somehow chose to re enter with one of these beasts.....I would be interested to hear rider impressions from other owners. Mine has dual seat and backrest/ twin leather bags..... but can be stripped of that stuff and made into a single seater..... it has a 260 tyre on the rear and takes some extra effort to get it to fall into a corner..... well, it never falls...you have to manhandle it....anything less than a super tight twisty section is easily doable though. So far I like it a lot......haha.. this from someone who registered the second 1986 GSXRSuzuki 1100 in Western Australia back in the mining days......... If any M109R riders happen to live in the South Auks/ Franklin area and want to meet up ( Probably top of the Bombays) to compare frozen pieces of anatomy.....I'm in.

Hi all,

So long story short I putting a zx9 B motor into my zx7r.

I am currently running 41 FCR's and intending using a kit airbox with the new motor.

Yamaha AG 100 1980 - Won't start!

Hi All,

New to site ;)

I just bought a Yamaha AG 100 (Ever since I was young boy I always dreamt of buying a AG100!) I'm 40 now and finally bought one! The sad thing is... it won't start! The bloke who sold it to me said he got it started few years back but sat in his garage ever since. I bought the bike anyway... So when I got it home I drained all the oils and refilled. Also took the fuel tank off and clean that out using Apple Cider Vingar (youtubed it). Fresh oils, fresh fuel, cleaned carb... good spark... ENGINE won't start? Check CDI unit.. (new) Checked Coil (new).. Can anyone help?

I had my silver Ride Forever course a few weeks ago and the ball at the end of my brake lever has fallen off. The instructor wasn't sure if it would pass a WOF because of that.

Does anybody know if it will fail for that?

Auckland: KLR Ramblers Ride - June

If you are looking for an easy but fun gravel oriented ride, look no further.
The details are all here:
http://ift.tt/2rhRtKt
This time the GPX file is again more in the rally style. It doesn’t have a track, but the way-points and a route. If you are using it in your GPS be careful! “Clever” GPS devices can take you places where you did not want to go, thanks to the auto routing function.

All kind of bikes are welcome, not just KLR.

Which LAMS bike should I get ?

Hi guys, this is my first post here. I've had my Learners licence since I was 18, had a few bikes in that time. Haven't had a bike for 18 years been doing the whole mortgage and kids thing. Now it's time to get a bike. I'm after a 650cc Naked bike as I'm 110kg, would prefer to pay about $8k but can't really find anything decent for that price. Seriously thinking about buying a new Kawasaki ER6N, then derestricting it when I get my full.

Any thoughts ?

Looking for skilled home mechanic in Dunedin

As with any first time restoration project, bit off more than I can chew. Pulled the bike apart and new paint job but that was the easy part. Due to lack of time/space, the parts have sat in the shed for a year now.

With the uni break soon, looking to get back into it. Will be sorting out the pieces soon and ordering any missing nuts and bolts. Could definitely use some help putting it back together.

But, as with any project, it's way over budget, so going to the pros is out of question. Best I can hope for is someone who can help out over evenings/weekends in exchange for some beers, feed and change. Can bring the parts over if it's more convenient.

If that sounds like you, hit me up.

Cheers

TGB Tapo 50cc - opinions/advice/recommendations

Hey,

New member and first post here.

Looking at buying a 50cc (only have car licence) for the commute to and from uni.

On a budget of max $2500, looking to buy new not second hand to get a scooter under warranty. Had a horrible experience buying a second hand Chinese scooter recently (only fools rush in eh..), not keen to buy second hand or Chinese again.

Have been doing a fair bit of research and am quite keen on the TGB tapo 50cc:

http://ift.tt/2sMxQvW

Taiwanese made, 2yr warranty incl. breakdown care, very peppy on test-driving.

Looking for advice from anyone with scooter experience about what they would recommend.

Also open to suggestions about other scooters in that price range!

Cheers,
Goose.

Router Thingymabob

Ok so sorted most stuff for new house.

Going to need a thingy for ASDL or VSDL internet service. I see some companies give you a free one, are they any good.
Paramount importance is easy setup and maintainance and good security.
Bandwidth usage will be general stuff, uploading ccctv from security system, sporadic gaming with world of warships and whatever flatmates get up to.
What do I need and how much should I pay?
thanks

New to NZ

Hi everyone!
I'm riding a bike for 7 years. My current baby is Honda CBR600RR but I have to leave her in Belarus. I'm going to stay in NZ for several years and want to take the maximum advantage of this opportunity. My plan is to buy a motorcycle as soon as I settle in and to explore your beautiful country. Any volunteers from Queenstown to help the girl to acclimatize? :innocent:

I would appreciate any help.

1980 Yamaha XJ750 chain rear wheel replacement?

Does anyone know of another chain drive wheel that will easily replace a 1980 Yamaha XJ750 shaft drive rear wheel?
Ideally with the drum brake setup the same so I can reuse that as is - so probably another Yamaha wheel.
Bit of a long shot but I thought I may as well tap into the brains trust here lol...
